Title: *** Switched to MAXDSL *** bRAS Problem? ***
Post by: purenirvana on May 08, 2008, 12:40:27 PM
Hello all,

I'm new here and hope somebody can help me. I was on a traditional old ADSL package from Tiscali. It was a slow 512k package. My router used to Sync at 576k downstream and 288k upstream on this package.

I have now moved to a MaxDSL upto 8mbps package again with Tiscali. They switched me over to the MaxDSL package about 60 hours ago, my router now syncs at 2464k downstream and 448k upstream and has done for the full 60 hours. I went on the BT speedchecker and my IP Profile is set at 2000k. Is this the same as my bRAS profile? As it is as 2000k now does this mean my bRAS profile has been amended?

The thing is that although my upload speeds have massively increased my download speeds are a tiny 511k still. Surely my download speeds should be in the 2000k (ish) region? Is it possible that my bRAS profile is stuck on the old 512k package as my download speeds have not increased? I presume that uploads are not profiled as they have increased in speed.

Is it worth turning my router off and on again to see how it resyncs and if download speeds increase?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help!  :)

Hi, and welcome. The first thing to do is post your router stats on here and let one of the guys have a look at them.

Welcome from me too.

To all intents and purposes, bRAS profile and IP profile are the same thing. So your connection should be capable of downloading at up to 2000 kbps, although the actual speed will depend on circumstances at the time. However it's pretty clear that Tiscali are restricting your actual download speed to what it was when you were on the fixed speed service. This may be what their small print says, or it may be a mistake. I think your only course is to talk to Tiscali about it.  Rebooting the router won't make any difference.

Hi

Yes as eric says bRAS and IP profile are more or less the same thing.  If your IP profile is set at 2000k it is set correctly for your sync speed and it certainly doesnt look like you have a stuck bRAS profile.

More likely IMHO that BTw have done the work at their end to upgrade your line to Max..  but your ISP hasnt amended the settings at their end too.

A quick call to your ISP saying that you are now synching at the higher speeds and your IPprofile has been set, but they dont appear to have lifted restrictions at their end.  Hopefully it shouldnt take them very long to sort it, once they have done this... and only when they have, then a reboot should pick up the new profile.
