Title: VMG1312-B10A problems
Post by: jnexkk on October 14, 2017, 06:12:48 PM
Hi Guys can you help me out. I just swapped from my ISP router to this one and it's connected OK, but it says i'm on Annex B and i can't change it to Annex A, do you know how?

I'm on FTTC 80/20 and my sync is dropping. I've lost 10 down and 5 up..
I'm getting CRC and FECs.. Quite a few FECs actually..  I have updated to the newest firmware straight away too..

You don't need to. "Annex" in this context simply refers to an appendix to a technical document, and for Openreach FTTC, both Annex A and Annex B apply, but to documents specifying different aspects of the connection. No doubt someone else will fill in the details.

My Zyxel VMG3925-B10B also reports 'Annex B' so i don't think it's anything to worry about.
I'm surprised you've lost sync speed though as the BCM chipset in the VMG1312-B10A is known for its good speeds (I assume you mean it's dropped since connecting the Zyxel?).
What ISP router were you using before?

Don't worry too much about FECs as these are corrected errors that effectively didn't happen - my line runs at tens of million per day!
CRCs are more of a concern as they are associated with Errored Second (ES) - how many are you actually seeing?

It's meant to report Annex B.
I've used about 10 modems and only the Asus DSL-AC68U has incorrectly reported Annex A.

If I try set Annex A I can't even get sync.

Ahhh cheers j0hn. Yeah my internet started dropping snr then disconnecting every 30 minutes after i connected my new router today, so i swapped back and it kept on happening. Rang the ISP and no issues from the line test, but he's getting openreach to come out have a look. It could be just a coincidence, but seems very strange.
Yeah i thought it was supposed to be more stable on this modem too, that's why i was a bit thrown, had plenty of CRC's too, tubaman :/

Hey guys just a quick question regarding said router.
My old router, the ISP supplied Asus N16 has an attaintable rate of 90meg, 6.2SNR, 13.6dB attenuation, but the VMG1312-B10A has 70meg, 4.6,  19.9dB respectively. Did i get a dud router? I was expecting good things.

The difference is probably just down to differences in the way the two devices calculate attainable speeds and attenuation. These aren't simple measurements, they are the result of algorithms, and they probably use different algorithms.
