Chap rings me up this morning (lots of noisy background like in a call centre + Indian accent), to tell me that they will be working on the phone lines and that my internet connection will be going down.
Me Ok I said, how will it affect me?.
Him BT are offering a free alternative connection to the internet as compensation.
This is being offered to all BT line users in your area.
Me mmm I said.
Him Can you go to your computer to change your IP address.
Me I don't need to, i've got a 4g backup connection, (mobile phone)
Him puts phone down ;)
Oldest scam new twist..... :D

Him Can you go to your computer to change your IP address.
Not heard of that one before...
No doubt at which point the majority of people wouldn't have a clue, so they will probably get them to install something like Team Viewer and proceed to take over the PC and drop something nasty :/
Like you say, new twist on an old scam

It was either last Wednesday or Thursday the telephone made its electronic noise to indicate an incoming call. I answered that call in my normal way. There was total silence, a click, background "yibber-yabber" noises and a male Asian voice started the spiel . . .
MAV: "My name is Michael and I am calling you from the telephone management service."
Grump Cat: "Don't be silly, your name is not Michael and there is no such entity as 'the telephone management service'. Good bye."
Grump Cat: <More forcefully, stressing each syllable.> "I said 'Good bye'".
The was a click and the background noise ceased. On checking the spoof "last number called" it began with 001284 . . . For those who don't recognise it, the code for EABSE is 01284. ::)
(I really ought to put together some sort of gubbins to send a 400 Hz tone, at +10 dBm, to the circuit when such calls are received.)

Not with
EABSE is 01284
??

In this particular usage case EABSE translates as "East Anglia Bury St Edmunds" and 01284 is the code for that exchange. :)
And "The Cattery" is located in Bury St Edmunds.

A week or two ago, I had an annoying loss of all internet for about an hour one evening. It was particularly annoying, as I was watching on online movie that I'd paid for. But when I checked online at zen, that outage had actually been scheduled as planned maintenance affecting my area code.
Interestingly though, over the next few days, I had a big flurry of scam calls 'regarding my connection'. I am betting the scammers are clever enough to know that if they monitor the planned maintenance schedules, and target these area codes soon afterwards, they might find more suckers. :(

Now that you have mentioned it, I see the logic behind their actions. :-X

Far too considerate.
Something around 1600 to 2K would be more annoying. ;)

Perhaps something made in Cuba (https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/17/08/10/2218247/hearing-loss-of-us-diplomats-in-cuba-is-blamed-on-covert-device)? >:D
