Title: Thunder storms...
Post by: skyeci on July 18, 2017, 10:45:01 AM
Just watching some storms coming across the channel... lets hope dlm will see these events headed our way as wide area events...I suppose the alternative is to disconnect if it gets really bad later. What will you do  ::)

The storms have reached Bournemouth, but they seem to be petering out as they move eastwards.

I have zero faith in dlm detecting what they delightfully call wide area events correctly. My experience is that whatever they do to detect thunderstorms is fatally flawed and should be completely re-designed. In fact much of dlm is in my view is pretty badly designed and can ignore things it should not and take action when it should not.

Current storm is running up the west side of London stretching back to Southampton area

Getting fairly spectacular not far from here.  I know I could disconnect, but then I'd miss the live show on lightningmaps.org.

If you've not visited that site before during a storm give a try, very very impressive. :)

It hit us down in Broadstairs at around 3am, didn't come to much, don't think it even rained.

We did get it around 3am. Very heavy rain and lots of thunder. My ES has taken a bashing....

Does that depend on being in an urban area with underground cables ?!

I live about half way between Bournemouth and Salisbury. About the time last evening  I heard the first rumble speed shot up by about 1500 kbps and has held since. The errors are horrendous!

Naturally in the very small hours that all changed!

Am at Frome... underground feed all the way to the pcp. Hope dlm sees it as area wide. I am almost out of ES for the day already.

Yes quite a lot of flashes but only a tiny amount of rain, not enough to tip my weather station rain gauge which needs 0.2mm to tip it. Did get a 38 mph gust of wind though with a 10 min average of 30 mph around that time.

If DLM does not see this as a wide area event then it proves my point that it is not fit for purpose.

Does that depend on being in an urban area with underground cables ?!

"The Cattery" is situated at the northern edge of Bury St Edmunds, a market town in rural Suffolk. It is just a short walk from my door to cross the town's northern boundary and into the countryside en-route to the nearest village.

Apart from the aerial drop, yes, my circuit is all underground from the foot of the pole to the PCP and then to the exchange MDF.

There were some spectacular visual effects in the sky from around 0030 hours this morning. What rumbles of thunder were from far, far away. Some rain fell, in quite short but extremely heavy bursts.
