Title: Anyone using the hacked TD-WD9970 and DSLStats
Post by: banger on June 16, 2017, 10:48:15 PM
I am trying to work out if its the hack in another thread or the WD9970s wireless dropping out. I am collecting stats over wireless but it has become very intermittent after about a day uptime. If you look at my SNR on MWDS you can see a lot of gaps where DSLStats can't login to the router coming back as incorrect user/password on DSLStats. Anyone else seeing this or is anyone using this modem in wired mode?

I think there is nothing wrong with the hack. The hack provides a means to execute a telnetd process in the router that lets you access the shell. If you flashed a modified firmware that contained a modified init script which launched a telnetd process to allow the same thing, it would work in the same way. You could adjust the hack so that it takes you directly to a shell without bothering to type in the username/password, this would save the router a small amount of work each time you login.

Wireless that's performing well will be very reliable, you could monitor the wireless performance by constantly pinging the router's IP address over the wireless. My 8970v1 used to kick everything off the wireless occasionally, but I could see from my computer's system log that the wireless had re-connected, and also by checking the router's dmesg (/proc/kmsg) which had some wireless-related error messages each time it happened. I don't think the kernel messages are available in the same place on a Broadcom platform such as the 9970.

Or you could write your own stats collecting script or program which remains logged in while between samples.

Thanks, Ejs, most of the things mentioned are beyond my skill level. I was wondering why it was so intermittent or if I had a faulty router.

Think I will try and get a second wd9970 from Ebay for testing purposes see if my router is faulty or just isn't up to giving stats every minute.

Been running ping to the router over wifi and getting lost packets when DSLStats stops logging in to the router. What does that tell me? Wifi dropping, route dropping or modem not responding to pings because it is too busy?

Hi I'm running DSLStats on a hacked W9970 in Bridge mode. I'm only 12 hours in up to now but will report back if I experience any problems. I'm connected using Ethernet linked to an old netbook with manually configured interface. I've got WiFi & DCHP turned off on the W9970 so my router might not be as 'busy' as yours.

As an aside, you must have another network interface set up in your monitoring box, how have you achieved that? I've tried setting up the netbook to connect to my home network using WiFi at the same time and things don't work too well - I assume it doesn't know which interface to use. My home network is on 192.168.1.x & I've set the router to 192.168.2.1

I have a dongle connected as a second network with a static IP set up in properties of 192.168.1.100 and gateway of 192.168.1.250 which is the WD9970 in bridge mode. So far it seems to work, have just rebooted the WD9970 and not getting any errors. Have tweaked everything on the WD9970 that might make it lose connection but seems to happen after 24 hours.

I was wondering if Windows 10 was getting confused with the routing but why would it work for 24hours then not. Anyway thanks for the reply. No connectivity issues just getting into the router is a problem.

21 hours modem uptime and DSLStats can't log in.

And as if by magic within an hour has started responding again.

My zyxel vmg8924 would regularly suffer telnet time outs even though others using it were fine. In the end I changed the modem for a different model/make as it was messing my stats up.

I am looking for another WD9970 on Ebay and Billion 8800 R2 as well to see if I just have a duff one but no cheap ones coming up so far.

8800nl r1 is much better than the r2 if you just want a bridge modem

You shouldn't need to specify the IP address of the 9970 as the gateway, there's no gateway, it's just a LAN connection between two devices.

Right have deleted the gateway address just in case it is confusing the routing.

Edit: Well that didn't work DSLStats and ping couldn't find the router without the gateway set on the dongle port.

I am going to try Powerline for 24 hours and see if it actually is the router not responding and turn wifi off.

Now using Powerline will have to keep an eye on DS ES but DslStats jumped into life as soon as I connected the Powerline to my Asus router. Although I cant seem to connect to the wd9970 webpage, getting 403 forbidden. Am able to ping the router ok so will run for 24 hours and see how MWDS copes.

Getting a few DS ES so DLM may intervene with the powerline adapters and also worked out why I was getting 403 forbidden on the web page because I had restricted to the dongle adapter's mac doh.

No packet loss after a few hours looks like the wifi was the problem all along. Gonna leave the powerline on and see what DLM does. Hope I don't go back to 6dB.

I presume you mean the TD-W9970?  (just checking you are searching for the correct model).
What price range are you looking for?

As cheap as possible, Eric is sending me a Billion 8800NL R2 so that is sorted.

Well, I ran ping to the WD9970 over wifi and lots of dropped packets, when DSLStats couldn't access the modem neither could ping and packets were timing out. Now that I can access the WD9970 over the WAN cable no dropped pings after 24 hours of testing and no dropped DSLStats data. It is looking increasingly like a wifi stability problem on the WD9970 or maybe just my unit.
