Title: Vista New Sections
Post by: kitz on April 29, 2008, 12:42:49 AM
As an experiment

-  and also noticing the tips that phil has been posting Ive split the Vista section into 2 parts.

Does it make it easier to find things?
Should we do the same for say Erics Penguin Pen?

Thoughts and comments?

Thoughts and comments. ................
Undecided, except, what is meant by "Child Boards"

Also is there any chance of losing all the underlines, I think it would look much better without them.

Thanks.

'Child boards' are like the sub-forums in the games forum.  As for the Vista section, I have no opinion as I don't use it.

I personally like the idea of having two vista sections.I know a lot of users don't have Vista, but I myself being a bit of a novice find all Phil's (OF) postings very good and informative. In my opinion I don't think we need the child boards, after all they lead you to the same sections of Vista so I can't see the point.
Thanks Kitz for once again for being thoughtful to the different OS platforms what are used on here.As regards to Erics Linux section,I have never used Linux, but if I did those sections would be my first port of call.

I guess the same thing could be handy in the penguin pen.

Unfortunately not - they indicate a clickable link (hyperlink) and are part of the software.  Although I could change it - it would also do the same for all links in the forum :/

This was done as an experiment really to see how it looked with a permanent "tips section" and a separate questions/discussion section.

Its not something thats just specific to the Vista section
- I just more tested it out there to see if it helped OFs tips (which are very much appreciated) be kept separate for permanent reference.

TBH I like the idea of the tips being readily accessible - but not sure about the splitting - so Im in 2 minds... which is why I thought I'd see what you guys thought.

I didnt dare test it out on the linux section (thats erics domain ) but it is something that could be applied to the whole forum.

So its over to you guys as to which you prefer.

> So its over to you guys as to which you prefer.

It seems over complicated having to look down two lists when one long list could suffice, plus more work for yourselves having to move posts from wrong sections.

A plus point for one list is that if someone is looking down one list they may spot a question they know the answer to.
If only looking down a "Hint & Tips" list, then they would not see the other post.

The important thing is that topics/thread need to be worded Clearly and hopefully "Searchable"

I quite like having a "Tips" section separate from any general discussion.  I've picked up quite a number of useful tips from posters on the site.  I also see some that, though not relevant at that moment, may be useful to refer back to in the future - but it is sometimes hard to find them again at a later date (I know there is a search facility but it isn't always foolproof - though it sometimes seems to be proof against this fool!)

I think with newer issues/areas that members are learning a lot from -  like Vista and Linux - there is a real  benefit in having the Tips as child boards but I'm not sure how many other sections would warrant similar treatment.

Couldn't the vista tips be a child board to the main vista forum?

No, it's a perfectly serious suggestion.

Oh right  :-X
I just can't see the connection with child boards and Windows Vista.

I just can't see the connection with child boards and Windows Vista.

I think the name "Child Board" is or can be misleading or inappropriate.

At the moment we now have three click-able options in view for Vista!

How about, if the index/s on the main page was left as they were, then by clicking on Vista (or whatever) would then open up with the two different options (sub folders) of say "Hints & Tips" and Problems? (or something similar)
The same layout as the Games section is at the moment.

This would also help to keep the main index page appear more streamlined for particular topics.

I think it is a very good idea as it can be used as a quick reference.

I don't think it is too bad really having the child boards.

It is certainly valuable being able to seperate what t basically Vista how-to's from Vista discussions. I expect "child boards" is the only way to achieve this.

We have our catergories, say, Computer Software and the board Windows Vista. I doubt that there is any other implementation of sub-dividing the board other than child boards(?)

I certainly wouldn't want to see more catergories say Vista, etc with individual boards as a way of "getting around" this.

In that sense the child boards seem to work nicely, but I can see why the name is not liked much. Another designation such as "sub-catagories" or something might be better than child boards.

For arguments sake:-
If you click on the Games section (of which there is only one showing on the main menu)
Then it opens revealing sub boards, which is good and fine.

At the moment, if you look at the Vista part of the main menu, it is showing Vista and 2 other smaller Child boards, "Vista Tips and Vista Discussions" (So we actually have 3 entries)
If you now click on the main Vista link, it still shows the other two options. This is what I find confusing.

Surely by just removing the Child Board/s headings from the main index page only, could make it appear a little better/tidier.

Or is it me ?

>> I doubt that there is any other implementation of sub-dividing the board other than child boards(?)

Not that Im aware of :/

>> but I can see why the name is not liked much

Agreed sub categories makes more sense - but since the forum software calls it child boards there isnt anything I can do about that.

>> If you click on the Games section (of which there is only one showing on the main menu)

Its set up the same - the "Games" 3 child boards are also shown underneath.  Maybe its just the position and the fact its at the bottom of the page that doesnt make it as obvious?

>> Surely by just removing the Child Board/s headings from the main index page only,

Unless Ive missed something - There isnt any way of doing that Im afraid. :/

Now I see, because it, the Games section is the last on that particular list, so with the child board headings being immediately below they are not that noticeable (too me that is).
Whereas with Vista being in the middle of a section, they are more noticeable.

Case closed, now of to SpecSavers.  8)

Ok ... so to basically sum up

Do I take it that the general consensus (or at least for the Vista forum) that it goes back to how it was?

 :D

How about pinning all the tips?

I've got used to it now and can see the benefit of it especially in time to come.
My only suggestion would be if it stays as is, is a slight name change from:

Child Boards: Vista Tips, Vista Discussion

To:
Child Boards: Vista Hints & Tips, Vista Problems & Discussions
