Title: MTRG (?) + DG834 for stats?
Post by: warmadmax on October 26, 2006, 09:00:48 PM
i saw a link the otherday that had a router reporting its SNR margin and other stats into graphs etc...

was wondering how it was done as i fancy doing to the same so i can keep tabs on how stable my line is,
at least while adsl max is training.

cheers!  :)

Hi

most people graph their stats using MRTG which isnt always for the faint hearted Im afraid.
Its easier with some routers than with others.
All of the routers Ive graphed have needed some additional perl programming (thanks chris).

I believe PRTG may be easier but it is more limited in how much it can graph, but Ive never personally tried it so I cant say.

The Netgear DG834G will allow you to graph data transfer, but to record SNR Margin, sync speed and attenuation does need some additional programming.

Chris is the expert on that and he may be able to point you in the right direction.
However, hes really busy with work right now and is away until after the weekend, so Im not sure when he will next make an appearance on here.

Hopefully he will pick up on this thread in a few days time.

dont knwo if this has been posted before,

but seeing as the DMT tool doesn't like the DG834(G) as they use TI chips aparently,
a link was posted to this tool (http://vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm)

seems to do what i wanted to although it doesn't mess with the router config like the DMT tool

Good find that.

I should start a sticky with tools like that.

Just tried the aforementioned RouterStats v 2.7d and it does work with the DG834GT and is just what I have been looking for.
Thanks for the info  :D

Rather than start a new thread -
WRT the DG834 (or any other router I suppose), what actually do the WAN port and LAN port Tx & Rx kB/s numbers mean/indicate?
I'd welcome an explanation or pointing to web that does that.
Thanks, Terry.

Theyre your router traffic stats counters  - ie the amount of data that has gone through your router.

Tx is transmitted
Rx is received.

Your router has two ports
WAN port being the Internet side
LAN port being your local Network side
If you have a wireless router then there will also likely be an additional set of figures for wireless.

Thanks for the info'.
I'm still a bit unclear as the units for Tx & Rx are a rate (B/s) rather than totals. So is this an average rate for the total uptime?
Terry.

B/s should mean Bytes per second but it doesn't seem to correlate properly,
i'd ignore that particular stat from the router.
unless its averaging since its been up but i cant see the point in that.

most important ones are the adsl link stats below, as these show the state of your line and if your likely to get any more sync speed or its syncing too high and dropping.
