Title: Static IP or not?
Post by: canon on April 24, 2008, 08:21:10 AM
I'm looking around with a view to change my provider and go to one the ADSL2 providers like BeThere or O2.
I see that O2 charge extra for a fixed IP and it is an option on some of the Be packages.
I've always had a fixed IP with Metronet and was wondering what the implications are of not having a fixed IP; advantages-disadvantages?
For example, is remote access or remote router management still possible with a dynamic IP?
Thanks,
Terry.

There are ways around a dynamic IP anyway
eg http://www.opendns.com/support/article/90

Get a static IP address if you are going to Be/O2 (same company) as the DHCP servers have a LONG history of falling over on a regular basis. If you have a dynamic IP address and the DHCP servers die then you're not going to get an IP address - oh and the Be/O2 DHCP servers have (had?) a lease time of 40 minutes ;)

Something I wrote a few years back - although it more from the angle of some peoples concerns about getting a static IP.
Static IP -v- Dynamic IP (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/staticIP.htm)

If Ive set up someones PC who are on a dynamic IP and  want remote access I normally use dynDNS (http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/windows.html).

Yeah I'm on a dynamic address for the first time ever (since 1992 - Demon days) and dyndns works fine for me.

Thanks for all the replies
So what does

mean?
I think I'll stick with a static IP if at all possible.
Terry.

DHCP servers "lease" you an IP address for a fixed period of time, after which the lease must be renewed.

Be/O2's DHCP servers have a lease time of 40 minutes so your router should ask the DHCP servers to either renew the lease on the existing IP address or issue a new IP address every 40 minutes.

Edit - this was the case when I was on Be. I don't believe its changed but it may have.

Sounds like another reason to have a fixed IP.
