Title: Current OR Engineer Visit Cost
Post by: Webbs1978 on February 08, 2017, 07:51:46 PM
Hi all,

Just moved by FTTC service to a new ISP from BT, want to ask them to get the DLM reset to see if this improves downstream (current rate = 52 mbps, max rate = 63 mbps) which has been that way since last few months with BT. Current ISP are telling if no fault found Engineer cost is £182 + VAT ("base charge"), is that legit or nonsense?

Thanks for any help :-)

If that is what your ISP is telling you, then it has to be legit surely. They can't just start making figures up.

What I will say is that differing ISP's appear to have differing tariffs, as to what charges they will impose on you, the EU. Whether they add on to OR's charge, or soak up some of the cost themselves, I wouldn't know ??.

They claim the price quoted is the BT Wholesale cost price to them. Seems steep to me is all, I thought it was £130...

You must remember that BT Wholesale are not Openreach.

Using the figures you have quoted, Openreach may well have the figure of £130 on their price-list. There is nothing wrong or illegal for BT Wholesale to quote a higher price to your ISP/CP. Nor is their anything wrong or illegal for your ISP/CP to quote a higher price to you . . . as they all want their "cut".

Would you be willing to disclose the new provider, to whom you have migrated, please? Also, what is the product to which you have subscribed?

. . . (current rate = 52 mbps, max rate = 63 mbps) . . .

You must remember that the maximum rate reported, by any CPE device, is just an estimate. The current rate is a true measurement. Depending upon the product to which you have subscribed, there may not be anything more that the circuit "can give". Is it worth the potential expense?  :-\

I would also ask that you get a speed estimate for us from the BT Wholesale ADSL checker. If you are provided through TalkTalk/Sky or any other LLU provider you will need to click on address checker.

Remember openreach cost excludes vat as is business to business pricing.

However regardless that doesnt mean what retail isp's have to charge consumers, they can charge less or more at their own discretion with agreement with end user.

The bigger isp's tend to absorb it or most of it, whilst smaller isp's wont have that ability.

I thought it also depends on what kind of engineer visit the ISP books. If the remote line test is OK and the speed is within the acceptable range, then I think it would have to be booked as SFI or boost or maybe even paying as time related charges or something like that. None of which would actually compel the visiting Openreach person to do a DLM reset.
