One or all of the web servers at the Scottish Gaelic-language college here in Skye (where I studied full time many years ago) seems to be unreachable according to a traceroute from my ISP and from other starting points that I have tried from.
Could anyone tell me anything about the route you are seeing and the point of any outage?

Are they really relying on a single pipe? Or is this a routing problem within the ja.net? Does anyone have any ideas?
It has been like this for a couple of days now.
-
Do you know of an administrator in Janet who you could contact?
All the information I had expired last century!
-
My neighbour works as a web admin, for UHI. I will talk to him. I wanted to have a sanity check, to know if this is a quirk related to routing from certain source networks, but I knew it was more than just a problem specific to my ISP.

Hi weaver
If you google downforeveryoneorjustme.com it states site is up
Many thanks
John

Thing is, it is down for burakkucat as well. And the possible ‘breakage’ appears to be within scotland but in ja.net, not within the UHI and is not a question of the one server being down, as the two web servers www and www2 show the same problem. I suspect it is a routing issue, not near Skye and not necessarily anything to do with a link being down.
I also personally know the webmaster for www2, so I'm doing a sanity check before I pester him.

If you enter the site's IP address (194.35.194.95) into a browser you get a plain page which just says in large letters "It works!". I guess that's a holding page while they sort out a problem.
-
roseway, that's interesting. Tonight I couldn't even get near the location though, as seen from my and burakkucat's traceroute, so it seems you are having more luck than me unless things have been fixed now i have sent off a few messages, one to my neighbour and the other to ja.net's public email.
-
it is now back up, after a few days. That's suspiciously quick. Thanks to all.

Btw, I have seen websites like the aforementioned is x down service, can't remember which ones I have looked at. Some of them are built from user complaints, is that the case? (Rather than pinging or http connections or traceroute etc live.)
-
I am told the site was inaccessible yet again earlier in the week but today www2.smo.uhi.ac.uk for example is up. God knows what on earth they or janet are up to.
I seem to remember there are services for monitoring some web server automatically - anyone have any experience of such?
