Wonderful!
-
Beautiful and captivating
-
Yep nice one, pictures look good and not fuzzy for a change.
-
Reminds me of when there was a pericam on Exeter Cathedral. A friend of mine, from another messageboard, went along and opened her red umbrella at a pre-arranged time so we could all see her.
-
Think we may have a hatching.
-
Isn't that wonderful!
-
Great news. Hope all goes well.
-
Oh wow.. talk about timing. I opened the web camera to have a look. At first mum was just sat there.. then I saw her glance to the right as dad brought some food in.
She then took the food from dad - moved off the nest to tear strips off to feed the chick.
I think I may have just captured what I believe to be some of the first pictures of the chick and it being fed.

Wow, brilliant timing, Kitz.
Mum was looking a bit tetchy when I last looked. I guess she'd sent dad out to the shops and she was thinking, I bet he's coming back via the pub.
-
Great timing, Kitz and thanks for sharing these images with us.
Another three eggs to go..............wonder if they will manage the full brood.
-
Great stuff Kitz!
-
You jammy devil, as usual I got bored and wandered off, did look as if another egg was in the process of cracking.
-
I think there may have been another hatching. Mum seemed to be moving about a lot and now there is, what looks like, a new piece of shell.
-
I think youre right Astral, theres definitely another empty shell.
She seems a tad "agitated at the mo" and shes moving around a lot... but you can clearly see the new shell..
and a wonderful closeup I just managed to grab, which shows how beautiful these creatures are.

I'm lost for words. This is truly wonderful.
-
Truly wonderful indeed.
-
Me too eric -
This is the moment dad flew back home and mum moved to one side almost as if to show off the newcomer.
(Actually looking closer on the pics I think its Dad thats actually on the nest now rather than Mum)

Thanks for keeping tabs on developments whilst I've been down the pub. Either you are watching constantly, or you are very lucky with the timing, Kitz. Either way, lovely screen grabs. :)
-
Just look what happens when I do some work outside on building a patio and turn my back. Two chicks now :'(
The chicks look good. :)
Last year they had four eggs but only two hatched, If I remember correctly a guy abseiled down after some weeks had gone by to remove the two that did not hatch so they could concentrated of looking after the two chicks.
-
>> Either you are watching constantly, or you are very lucky with the timing,
Believe it or not mostly a fluke. Although I was watching earlier, a friend round was round this afty but after they'd gone at about 6ish, I saw your post so decided to look at the cams again, which is when I got the pics of the empty shell.
After that I did "watch" for quite a while though (dual monitors so was able to keep it open whilst doing other things) which is when I saw the 2nd chick.
-
Chick are being fed at the moment.
Looks like three hatched now. One egg to go!
-
Oh wonderful :)
I did actually look in earlier - but there wasnt that much going on.
-
If anyones about - Mum is feeding the 3 chicks right now

-
Damn! Missed it again. But thanks for those great snapshots.
-
Three how nice. :)
-
Provided they don't do what those owls did on the last spring watch. :(
-
They've all hatched! :)
-
Great news
Lets hope the last one out is strong enough to avoid being eaten by it's siblings.
-
It's difficult to separate them, but there was no egg, no mum and quite a lot of white fluff huddled together.
-
Sorry to disappoint, but I have just seen an egg !, at 21.20, so only Three chicks.
-
They're going to be a good team, those chicks, cos I couldn't see a hint of egg. Let's see what tomorrow brings.
-
These are from earlier which I didnt get chance to post at the time.

-----
Im not sure or not if thats a pip in the first image on the top right of the egg or not - its a bit hard to see from the picture.
If it is - then I guess we will know tomorrow.
-
The birds are doing a great job, but you're doing a pretty good job too. Thanks for all those pictures. :)
-
lol I guess you can gather I found the whole thing wonderful and cant help but look in from time to time.
I honestly havent been watching 24/7, but seem to have been very lucky indeed with my timing and therefore thought I'd share.
Feeding times are over so quickly that they can easily be missed... and they're about the only chance you get to see the chicks.
PS
I was at a friends yesterday for tea... and because we had "drinkies" last night I stayed over - but before I left today I looked in at the cams and was showing them ... and I've just had this horrible feeling that I may have left the cam window open when we walked out.
Will soon find out if their PC has been streaming the webcams all day to no-one :o
[edit]
Luckily we had closed the windows - so no wasted bandwidth. - phew
-
Thanks for the wonderful screen grabs, Kitz. :) You do seem to be gifted where timing is concerned.(and in lots of other ways, too numerous to list, natch)
-
Still 3 chicks and one egg at 11:30 this morning, when the birds swapped over (too quickly for me to get a snapshot).
-
I saw the 11am feed earlier.. when I first looked in it really did look like there was a pip on one of the eggs... but I now have some close-up which show that perhaps not. :/
Will post the pics when Ive cropped and uploaded.
-
They think thr fourth egg has hatched, poor little mite will get bullied.
-
They think the fourth egg has hatched.
Yes I can see an empty shell ;D.
-
Sorry was really busy yesterday and never got chance to post them.
First couple of pics are the ones where I thought the last egg was pipped.
Theres also some good closeups of the chicks - wasnt sure which ones to post so thought to heck with it - and posted the lot. :/

What fabulous pictures! Thanks yet again. :)
The last few pictures clearly show four chicks with one being smaller than the rest. The small one probably won't survive, but if there's enough food around then the others stand a good chance.
-
Thanks again for a wonderful picture show, Kitz. :)
-
Yes great photo's . :)
I like the new 'close up's' in the upgraded video stream from the Cathedral.
Edit.. Not sure if you have seen this web page... http://www.derby.gov.uk/LeisureCulture/MuseumsGalleries/EnvironmentalProjects/PeregrineProject.htm
-
Nicks also added some new video clips
http://derbyperegrines.blogspot.com/2008/01/2008-video-clips.html
-
Those are great clips. I love the 'moment of hatching' one with the cathedral clock chiming the hour. :)
-
That was on our local TV news.
-
Have you seen the new Video stream with sound.
look on the main site for details.
Just looked at 23.30 and can not wait until day light to have a look again. ;)
-
Ive been really busy the past few days so havent had chance to look and see the latest.
However it appears that the webcams are down this weekend :(
-
The webcams are working again, and the chicks are getting bigger. :)
-
My goodness they really have grown since I last looked at the cams.
Its good to see that the "lil un" seems to have caught up too from what I can see and all 4 chicks are looking healthy.
The parents must be kept really busy trying to feed them. :)
-
I looked in this morning and got a bit of a shock - the nest was empty. But the other camera shows that the chicks have moved across into the right-hand section. The view isn't clear, so I can't see if all four are still there.
-
I certain I could see three but there could be four. As you say, hard to tell on that camera.
-
Yeah the RH cam isnt too clear and it doesnt help that theres some debris hanging down in front of the cam either :/
However after watching for a lil while I have just spotted four. One is definitely smaller, and doesnt seem as mobile as the other 3.
-
Just been watching mama fill up two with bits of unfortunate prey, the third is coming in to the crowd for food, the fourth which is very small is being trampled over in the rush.
It will not survive.
Three out of four will be a good result for a peregrine.
-
Yes, I think you're right. It was always probable that the fourth one would be too small to make it.
-
I see on the peregrine blog that they are going to ring the chicks soon, There are normally two people abseil down to do the job.
Being 212 feet high the tower is a popular place to do charity abseils down from the roof and its one of the things I would like to do.
A bit about the Cathedral.
* The original church was founded by King Edmund in around 943 as a royal collegiate church however there is no trace of its existence today.
* The current cathedral dates back from the 14th century although it appears to be based on an earlier medieval building which drawings show was about the same size as the present church. One theory is it became structurally unstable and was pulled down.
* The tower dates from 1510 to 1530 and was built in the popular perpendicular gothic style of the time.
* Derby Cathedral became a cathedral by Royal Charter in 1927.

You have probably noticed on the peregrine blog that the chicks have had identification ring fitted the other day.
Its a small world because Martin who abseiled down and ringed them lives in my village and if I see him I will try to get some info about the chicks. ;)
-
Gosh the chicks are really growing now - and getting some of their feathers rather than being balls of cotton wool.

oooh 8) please give goss if you get any :D
-
Just had a look on the webs cams ( 9.50 pm ) and two chicks are on one side (web cam left) of the nest tray and the other two are on the other side (web cam right), I think they must have had there first argument and have fell out with the other two.
-
They're teenagers now, so Mum has put the boys in one bedroom and the girls in another.

Did no one tell the mum she has three boys and one girl.
-

-
I see they still seem to be split between "two rooms",
but they do look real funny to me... now that their adult feathers are starting to come through :D
-
I've been watching them for some time today, and the two biggest chicks are really getting active, hopping between the two sides, flexing their wings, and half flying. I guess it won't be long before they take the big leap into the unknown.
-
Gosh - almost overnight (or so it seems) - one of the chicks seems to have developed most of its adult feathers.
It even has the distinctive peregrine speckles on its chest now.
-
Do my eyes deceive me, or has the tiny little one managed to survive ?
There does seem to be a cotton wool ball amongst the bigger chicks.
If so, good for him/her
-
Yes, there are still four chicks there. But I saw a parent feeding them earlier, and the little one hardly got a look in.

Indeed it is not getting it's fair share, but it is now just over a week since I predicted it's death (24th. May) so the wee guy has done very well to be here still.
Something with that will to live deserves all the support it can get.
(ps. local corncrakes sitting on eggs now, but am not going anywhere near them to count. Farmer being very helpful and has left them a good big area of fallow ground.)
-
Yes they do seem to get bigger each time I look.
While on a 10 mile walk last week with my daughter we had the pleasure to have flying above us, when we were crossing over a field, a pair of Red Footed Falcons.
I beleave they are quite rare.
-
Very rare. They don't belong in the UK at all, although small numbers get blown across each year from Eastern Europe where they do belong. They usually end up in Norfolk. I'm quite jealous. :(
-
There was some excitement this morning. One of the youngsters jumped up onto the wall of the balcony and stood there flexing its wings. I watched it for some time almost holding my breath.

-
I missed that but was watching earlier, they seem a bit agitated this morning, perhaps breakfast is late.
-
Yes, you could be right about that. The youngster was up on the wall again just now, and gave the impression of looking around hoping to see Mum arriving.
-
Lunch just turned up. I was beginning to wonder where the parents had got to.
And here's what happened afterwards. The youngster really looked as though it was going to fly, but it didn't.

Just saw one perched on the edge having a good flap. Was convinced it was off on its maiden flight but they all seem to be back in the nest.
-
Good pics there eric. :)
I just watched as one of the parents brought in a pigeon to feed the chicks with.
Interesting how the little one actually backed away into a corner on its own ... whilst the other 3 lined up for lunch
-
Yes, the little one does look like a second class citizen. But yesterday I saw the parent feeding the little one by itself, with the others keeping out of the way.
-
He does seem a lil bit of a loner - I was laughing to myself when I saw it occur... because it was almost like he was sent to "the naughty corner".
All credit to the parents then, for feeding him alone... as I saw this occur when they were all much smaller too, when one of them brought something back "just for titch".
The parents must be keeping the others well feed too.. or else I wouldnt imagine the others would stand back whilst the smaller chick was being fed... In most instances it wouldnt stand a chance.
-
I guess there's no shortage of food. Their favourite is feral pigeon, and there will be plenty of those in Derby.
-
Do I only see Three chicks ?.
It's a bit early for them to take to the wing, Its probably on the Nave roof below the nest site (quite a long way down) hope its ok.
Edit ..Now there are four again :'(
Maybe I need new glass's.
-
One of the young ones fledged at 2.30 p.m this afternoon, no word yet if it found a safe landing - hope so.
-
Aw, I've been watching it quite a bit, hoping to catch the moment, but I was out this afternoon.
-
There is a bit on the blog about it and a video clip.
-
Loved the video clip of two of them stretching their wings before their fledge.
It is certainly open to one of those Johnny Morris interpretations of the birds thoughts.

Look for Derby Peregrine Falcons 12-
Fledge from the Ledge.
"It's a looong way down and I don't know if I will master this flying thing on my first attempt.
"Why couldn't mum lay the eggs a bit nearer the floor?
"If I cling on tight and flap my wings just to see if they will carry my weight, first. Can't be too careful.
"OK! I've read the flight manual, wings seem alright and I can move all the controls.
"On Three, chocks away!. One. . . . . . . Two. . . . . . (Wait for it) . . THREEEEEEEEEEE!"

Nice one Dave
So true to again with another crash landing this morning of 003 this time.
A case of OMG it's a long way down, Help !.
-
Some VERY good photos of the youngsters today:

The twitchers keep having to round them up in the city and take them back.

-
We have any empty nest box now. :).
Just been watching a parent feeding a young one on the ledge. :)
-
I haven't look at this for a while now. Did all four chicks make it ?
-
TD,
They are getting around well. Keep having to be returned because they are having probs taking off from the ground, unlike you!
Latest on Tuesday was they knew where three were and a bit unsure about the fourth:

Good news ;D
I can imagine that half the folks rescuing the wee guys when they get stranded will be the same folks who, next year, will be complaining that 007 and his mates are down eating the blue tits off the peanuts ::)
-
It's been an amazing experience, watching it right through.

I'm glad I put this post on now :).
It's been very popular , unlike a post I put on a I.T site for school IT staff, I had no response at all :'(
This is a BBC link, as seen on our local TV tonight about the small chick 007.
