Title: TalkTalk retail censorship
Post by: Weaver on December 03, 2016, 07:52:34 AM
A good friend of mine in England is staying somewhere where there is a TalkTalk (retail) DSL line. The TalkTalk service somehow seems to have a nanny censorship facility on it that blocks access to kitz.co.uk, redirecting the user to a whinge webpage saying something about "social networking category" content.

So apparently you lot are a bunch of dubious coves. Dido would appear to be getting ahead of the game, to please Teresa May and her North Korean Nanny State.

A VPN service soon rendered the censorship a joke of course.

Is it possible to access kitz over TLS / SSL? (Mind you, the TalkTalk thing might be operating at the level of DNS, so that could be the real issue.)

Sounds like the parental filters, which picks up any forums. I played about with it for about 5 minutes, but my 9 year old bypassed it instantly so was never used again.

Ask your friend to check if social media is blocked in parental filters. If it is, it's working as it should.

I asked her if she can access the facebook.com website, apparently that's fine using a web browser, so very odd.

Ive no idea why I'd be blocked.  The only thing I can think is that the front page does replicate the last few facebook posts.

There is a category for social networking in their settings

I use TT but obviously this site is not blocked so I would think they are using the TT protection stuff which is only supposed to block the 'adult' type sites.

Perhaps facebook.com is not blocked because it's using TLS. But I would have thought that TalkTalk simply block the route to some IP address range regardless. I told her to use OpenDns or google DNS and try that. But the issue was solved using a VPN provider as I mentioned earlier. A bit of a mystery still then.
