Title: replacing router
Post by: grumpy old man on October 22, 2016, 05:52:33 PM
I am considering retiring my Netgear DG834G router after many years of service.

CA has recommendations for Synology RT1900ac or TP-Link Archer C9.  Are these OK, any other suggestions?  Do I need to make sure a router has a built in modem (my knowledge of routers could be written on back of pastage stamp) or do they all have one?  I ask this question as in CA they refer to a TP-Link Archer D9 with ADSL modem built in.

I have BT phone line so assume I will need an ADSL router.

Thanks

You need an ADSL modem/router. There's a large collection at different prices here: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/store/wifi-routers/adsl-wifi-routers-n/

To expand on the above a bit, it's probably true to say that any of the models listed in my link will give you satisfactory performance. It really comes down to what you want, and if price is the main factor, then the TP-Link models should be fine. The Billion 8800NL original version (rather difficult to find now) is excellent, but I believe the R2 version shown in the link is fairly ordinary.

If you intend to upgrade to FTTC (aka Infinity) at any time, you might want to consider a VDSL/ADSL modem/router rather than just ADSL.

Thank you for your responses.

With FTTC as cable from cabinet to house is ADSL what advantages will VDSL router give?

With FTTC, the signals from the cabinet over the telephone line to your house are VDSL2, so you'd need a device capable of VDSL2 to use it with a FTTC service.

How long is your line? What speeds are you getting?

My download speed is 15.4 Mbps, and upload 1.1 Mbps.

I am within 500 m of the telephone exchange.
