Title: Mypostoffice
Post by: petersmyth1 on April 11, 2008, 02:44:23 PM
Hi all

At long last I've gathered together the pennies to connect to broadband. For some godforsaken reason I opted for mypostoffice.co.uk,  See http://ww.mypostoffice.co.uk/

It works on the web very satisfactorily but emails and it seem to live on different planets. I can download the info from the new emails to my old email pop3 address using Mailwasher, it's the free1 so can only download from 1 email address, but I'm damned if I can then download them in OE or Thunderbird

Sending emails using this ISP's connection is so far wishful thinking.

So I'm left wondering should I wait and see or cancel the deal under the product not fit for purpose clause

Has anyone here got anything nice to say about mypostoffice.co.uk?

Peter

You don't have to use their email service, you could use webmail, but I take the point about getting what you are paying for.

personally I recommend not using your ISP's free email account's, buy a separate domain name/email hosting from a 3rd party so that way if you ever leave/change your ISP you don't have to give up your email address. Over the year's I've been with (and worked for) several ISP's but my email address has always stayed the same :)

Yes, I second what Drefsab says.It costs next to nothing to register a .uk domain, and it makes email life a lot simpler. For the actual email handling I use GMail, which has some handy features of its own.

Thanks everybody

I know web based mail, eg hotmail, is available but over the years I've just never got into it but it now looks like it's Hobsons choice.  >:(

Roseway exactly what is involved in buying a UK domain just to use it for email purposes. How does it work and roughly how much money are we talking about?

There are several companies offering the service. I use http://www.123-reg.co.uk and they meet my simple needs. For a .co.uk domain you have to sign up for two years at a time, but it only costs £2.79 a year. For that you get full ownership of a xxxxx.co.uk domain and various services including web and email forwarding, which you set up in a simple control panel. You use the control panel to forward your emails to your actual email address which is where you pick them up. It's pretty painless.

Hi and thanks eric  ;)

I eventually managed to set OE up to receive postoffice emails and about 2 days later managed to get it to recieve my previous addresses pop3 emails. The thing that gets up my nose is that what took me days to do myself should have been bread and butter stuff for Postoffice's own telephone technical staff to guide new subscribers correctly owing to the number of times they ought to have been asked about it before.
