Hi guys,
I found the site via google searching for Slow BT connection... plenty of results! Anyway, Some of what has been mentioned seems familiar and I was just wondering if you guys who are "in the know" could take a look over my details and see what you think?
I'm supposed to be on Option 3, "unlimited" up to 8 Meg using the BT HomeHub and a Belkin 54Mbps adaptor.
What I get is a usual 20Kb/Sec, The most I've ever had has been about 40-60k.
I complained about this to BT a few times and they just shrugged and did nothing about it. I've got so sick of them that I'm leaving but I'm worried that if there is a problem then a change of ISP wont solve anything...
So I'm not 100% what you need so please let me know but some things I've seen are:

Hi and welcome.
First, it would seem that your slow speeds are nothing to do with your ADSL connection, because you got a reasonable speed from the Thinkbroadband speed test. If your connection speed is 3200 kbps, then your IP profile will be 2500 kbps, and you got 2364 in the TBB test. If your actual download speeds are a lot less than that, then it's likely to be either congestion or traffic management by your ISP (do you use P2P a lot, for example?).
But another point is that your connection speed is quite low for the attenuation level of your line. With a downstream attenuation of 34 dB you should be connecting at well up towards the maximum 8 Mbps. It would be well worth reading this (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm) and the associated pages to see if you can improve your connection speed and stability.

It may also be worth tweaking your MTU/RWIN settings. I have found that they can become corrupted/changed somehow. Yesterday I reset mine (to Kitz recommended 1430/166800) and my download speed more than doubled to what I used to get before, what I thought was, exchange contention getting worse.

Thanks for the reply, I tried plugging into my test socket and got an immediate double in speed. It is usually wired via a filter into the socket, could it be a dodgy filter?
-
It could be a dodgy filter, or it could be your telephone extension wiring. Have a read of this (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/troubleshooting.htm) and the associated pages.
-
I'd put money on a cheapo extension causing this.
-
The main concern I see on this line is the 36,598,148 FEC error's on the down stream. As has already been said the most likely cause for this is a problem with internal wiring/extensions. Trying the router from the master test socket (http://www.zensupport.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/article.aspx?id=10828 (http://www.zensupport.co.uk/KnowledgeBase/article.aspx?id=10828)) then post up your line stats. If you see no improvement try changing the microfilter at this point and see if theres any change.
-
Along with the number of errors being seen on the line, there's a very high SNR being set, causing the sync speed to be considerably lower than what I'd normally expect it to be.
The best bets would be to:
- Ensure that the router is wired into the master socket via a filter.
- Ensure all used telephone sockets are filtered.
- Also try changing the filter that you are using.

Pssst... james
> there's a very high SNR being set

Easy to misread, but downstream SNR is only 6dB - must admit I read it as 20dB first
-
Oops!
Guess who misread this as the SNR!
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 11.5 / 19.5
-
Oops! At least I was looking at the right line :P
Your other points were good, though ;D
