Very interesting, I wasn't aware of the 1859 event, or the probability of such an event, or the damage it would cause.
I have added it to the list of things I am going to worry about today, but won't promise how long it will stay on the list, needing to compete with various bits of outdoors house maintenance that need done before I run out of summer. :)

I can just pull out the big 100 A fuse and isolate the house on the live side, but breaking the other conductor on the neutral side is difficult and that means trouble. Need to disconnect three 4.6 mi long phone lines too quick. Thank goodness for NASA and plenty of warning, need to sign up for an alert from them somehow?
