The Billion Bipac 8900-AX 1600 is now showing as in-stock at broadbandbuyer - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/24984-billion-bipac-8900ax-1600-r2/ (http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/24984-billion-bipac-8900ax-1600-r2/).
I'd be really interested to see any reports on its performance as I'm itching to replace the, erm, basic Technicolor 582n (on Plusnet VDSL) with an all-in-one.

Does it use the same ADSL/VDSL chipset as the Billion 8900-2400? The broadcom chipset are generally very robust so I can't see you having any issues with it. Firmware will be in early stages so expect a few bugs if you go ahead with it.

Order placed. I'll let you know how it compares with an HG612 + Netgear but as I'm already at my cap of 40mbps I won't get any more speed downstream.
My main reason for upgrading is (hopefully) better wi-fi, gigabit ports and to free up a mains and LAN socket

Hmm - not clear if the 8900AX-1600 does 5GHz 802.11ac wi-fi. The "features" blurb on both Broadbandbuyer and the Billion website says yes, but the "specifications" tab implies not.

I should know for sure on Monday but I guess the three aerials are a clue ...

And for the couple of years of delays and testing, and the premium price on the 8900 series, they still haven't managed to get it Wi-Fi certified, which means it will have had a lot less interoperability testing and fixes than the cheapest router.
Interesting to see how people get on with it.

With regards to the Billion 8900AX-2400 I took delivery of one this morning and it is going back, as soon as I got it out of a the box I could see that the cheap poor quality plastics included a large number of scratches and chips free of charge. Very very disappointing for premium price product.

I didn't realise the 8900-2400 was out yet. I thought it was only the 8900-1600.
Edit: So it is. I'll be keeping an eye on it as I may switch to it from the D7000.

With regards to the Billion 8900AX-2400 I took delivery of one this morning and it is going back, as soon as I got it out of a the box I could see that the cheap poor quality plastics included a large number of scratches and chips free of charge. Very very disappointing for premium price product.
I'm beginning to think Billion aren't producing premium products, just expensive ones. They are living off their reputation somewhat, but do seem quite popular down under. I'd be surprised if they are in this market much longer though.
These days it is just as important these products look good and feel premium given they are typically on display, and for the price, I don't understand why it isn't metal (has external antenna so can be) or they haven't come up with a better premium plastic design. These Billions seem to sit uncomfortably between home type consumer routers, but looks naff and is pricey, and more business like all singing and dancing routers, but businesses would laugh at the quality and durability of them, spending not too much more for better grown up kit.
Did you fire it up and try it out though? Or were you so disgusted you just packed it up :'(

I powered it on to test the wireless performance (as IMO this is the biggest weakness of the 8800NL which I was generally happy with). Disappointingly in my environment the wireless performance (in terms of range) was no better than the 8800, if anything it was marginally worse.
I knew as soon as I opened the box that I would be returning the unit, so I did not attempt to test the modem.
I am now considering a draytek 2860vac, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this router? Typically how do the sync rates compare with the 8800NL?

My 8900AX-1600 arrived earlier and is now up-and-running. No scratches on it (!) and WAN speeds are roughly the same as the old HG612.
I guess it may take a little while to settle down but after 1 hour of operation max downstream and SNR are slightly better while upstream sync/SNR slightly worse, but not significantly.
But as I said earlier, the primary reason to change was for gigabit ports and better wifi. And to confirm - it definitely has 5GHz wi-fi.
ps I'm "kempshott" on MyDSLWebStats to try and spot any differences.

Thanks for that, I have been looking at your MyDSLWebStats as i am still interested in the 8900AX-2400. I am not 100% sure what I am looking at do forgive me if this is normal, looking at the 5 day trend it would appear that there has been an increase in FEC counts with the CRC counts remaining roughly the same.

The increase of FEC errors may be down to bit swapping being turned off look at the stats

My downstream FEC rate was steady at around a million, which didn't seem quite right in spite of reassuring comments here and elsewhere. Then in the wee hours of the 12th there was a resync which resulted in a small increase in upstream sync, and no FECs since.
