Title: HR fault detection - improvement
Post by: Black Sheep on July 22, 2016, 08:03:42 AM
The 'Delta R' test that has been mentioned from time-to-time within the engineering fraternity, now seems to be gathering pace. Only recently, all team members on my patch were asked to complete a Broadband CBT course that skirted over this new test.

If one is to be run, it has to be done so before a PQT. Because the IR test on a PQT is carried out at 95v, this can mask or temporarily mend a HR ........... the Delta R runs at about 7v thus standing a better chance of detecting a potential HR.
I can't give any feedback on it myself as yet, as haven't needed to use it in anger.

Is this new test something that can eventually be integrated into the remote line tests or would it need an engineer to physically carry it out?

I couldn't say what the boffins may do next, ie: integrating it into a remote test, but as it stands right now it has to be performed by an engineer on site.  :)

An interesting development. Thank you for sharing.  :)

I recall, some years ago (2011), when the Copper Integrated Demand Testing (CIDT) was announced. It was described thus --

Quote from: PHME 62559
Copper Integrated Demand Testing (CIDT) is a new enhanced line test capability
that offers big benefits to Openreach and Communications Providers (CPs) alike.
It’s part of a major programme to upgrade our test capability and uses innovative
techniques and analysis on new generation test heads. CIDT vastly improves the
ability to identify and locate problems with end user voice and broadband services.

Further information being --

How it works

CPs currently submit line tests via Dialogue Services. The Basic Line Test can’t detect HR
faults so if a fault persists the only option for a CP is to request an engineer visit.

CIDT is an optional service for CPs which will detect High Resistance (HR) faults and many
underlying broadband performance faults.

The attached image (CIDT Process) is taken from the PHME 62559 document, © British Telecommunications plc 2011.

interesting, so this is a new extra test designed to catch HR faults.

Wonder will they put the HR fault into three grades Small Medium & Large and only follow this up when it shows as medium to large as most of use must have a very slight HR issue on 1 or both legs.

will wait and see how this improvement helps end-users when it's introduced

I believe, (and this is only my opinion), that it will be integrated as part of the Job Standards  on jobs like CDTA (Conscious Decision Top Appoint), and 'Broadband green' jobs that appear on the face of it, to be ok using all the remote tests available.

I'd like to detect HR fault on Hlog and QLN.

How does a CIDT test head get attached to your line? Does it need manually plugging into your MDF port?

No, it 'attaches' automatically (if the engineer wishes to run a CIDT test), via prompts on his/her mobile phone.

A bit more sophisticated than the 'give it a burst of megger' that we used in my day to try and fix HR faults.  ;D ;D ;D ;D
