Title: Missing links, 'replies' and 'new posts'
Post by: sevenlayermuddle on April 20, 2016, 09:09:01 PM
I can't help thinking I'm confused here as nobody else has mentioned it.  But...

...Until a couple of days ago, if you browsed the forums when logged in, there were two links near the top, words to the effect of... "New replies to your posts" and "New posts since last visit".  These links  seem to have vanished.

Fwiw, I see this effect with Safari, both OS X and iOS.  I've tried resetting the devices, clearing history & cookies, etc.    If I'm being an idiot, break it to me gently.   :-[

Most certainly I am. Ow,  and in answer to the unasked question, yes... I have tried logging out and logging in again. :)

Hang on ... just had a thought...  have you minimized the top panel

Top right by the date,  theres a plus and minus symbol.
Click the plus sign as indicated by the arrow in my screen cap below.

Yep, that was it.

I had the feeling I was being a twit, and I was right.  Well at least I WAS right about something. :D

I probably hit the minimize by accident, browsing on the iPhone's small screen at some point.

Ta very much.

Vaguely interesting, at a level of one on a scale of ten, that once set it took lasting effect on all devices.

Just before Kitz's penny dropped, I was about to post that Firefox on my CentOS box, that had never before been used for web access, exhibited same symptoms.   From my very limited understanding of such things, I would have expected the setting to be stored in a browser cookie, per device?

Yes, that is what I would have expected.  :-\

The fact that it is carried across browsers means that it must be stored somewhere amongst user preferences, which will also include such things as boards to ignore and all the other Look and Layout options.

You can also collapse any of the panels for all of the board sections (they also have exactly the same + and - sign).

I happen to notice that when logged out you dont get the option to collapse any of the board sections.
The only one that doesnt is the top panel and that's because I have quick login enabled as a forum wide preference setting.

Without quick login that panel wouldnt be shown to unregistered users, so therefore if you switch it off (like 7LM did)  you are in effect over-riding what I set as default on the server.

As a test I just opened the website on my tablet in a browser I dont normally use.   I clicked the - sign in the top panel, closed the browser then re-opened it and it was back to default.  So its a setting that only registered users can permanently opt to over-ride and not stored as a cookie.

Thanks, Kitz, for taking the time to explain.   I live and learn. :)

I'd not noticed you can collapse/expand panels for other sections too.  Having tried it, I'd like to think it was more obvious, should it happen by accident.  But watch this space.  If in a few years time, considering my short memory span, should I post it as a new 'problem', then no need to be gentle... emphasise without mercy  that I am indeed a twit.

Well you learn something new every day. :)
