Title: PBX phones on a normal pstn line

Hi guys,

Used to have a pbx system installed, but have now moved to a much smaller office and don't require the full features of a pbx anymore.

I've ran 3 extensions from the nte faceplate (using a termination block)

My question is, can I use the pbx phones still? I've plugged them into the sockets, and theres no dial tone. I do however have dialtone in all 3 sockets using my normal analogue phone.

Do I have to use pin 3 for the bell wire to get dialtone? The phones were previously powered off the pbx system, and I dont have psu's for the phones (Have just ordered some) but didn't think i'd need a supply for them to have dialtone?

The connector is an rj11 on the end that goes into the phone, and a normal telephone connection on the other end going into extension socket.

Is there a switch on the base of the phone so you can switch from a pbx phone to a normal phone?

Hmm, Not that I noticed, will have a look tomorrow when I get in the office.

Is that a fairly common feature?

Welcome to the Kitz forum.

That is an interesting question . . . Thinking back to my experience, in a similar situation, from the early 1980s the answer was no, the PABX telephones did not operate on a standard PSTN line.

If you would post the make & model of the telephones and of the PABX to which they were connected, perhaps someone will be able to look up specific details.

My BT Vanguard phone has a 3 position switch with MFT, MFE and LD as the selection. It works on MFT. See http://www.britishtelephones.com/t4001.htm

Thank you for the replies, I will get the make and model tomorrow and post them up here, and hopefully somebody can help and also check if there's a switch to change them to normal phones.

However, I just checked and it gets a dialling tone in all 3 positions, it just doesn't dial. Perhaps it needs the PSU as you said.

The phones are bt 8528's. If anybody knows if I can use them or not, that would be great.

That three position switch just selects the calling mode and the method for exchange recall. (Note: exchange recall, not "re-dial" last number.)

MFT = Dual Tone MultiFrequency calling, with Timed break for exchange recall.
MFE = Dual Tone MultiFrequency calling, with Earth application to the B-wire for exchange recall.
LD = Loop Disconnect calling (at a nominal 10 pps).
