Title: Router will not allocate an IP address
Post by: Keyblade92 on March 27, 2008, 10:38:58 AM
Hello again,

My current problem is that the router I am using (Zoom ADSL X6) will not allocate an IP address - the one it does give is  a 169.254.89.115, and the default gateway is the same.

Can anybody help please - or would it be better to take it back to the shops?

That IP address is what is called a private IP address.

Its where Windows (guess your on Windows?) fails to acquire an IP address and assigns itself one starting with 169.

That is also why the gateway is the same.

Best bet to proceed is check your firewall settings, try connecting via ethernet checking the connections are correct (if your not already), try hard rebooting the router (sometimes they throw wobblies).

Is DHCP turned on in the router?

jelv :Yes, it is

soms : Ok, I will try that... if it fails I will see if I can take it back to PC World and get a different make of router.
