Title: Getting monitoring working billion 8800nl+tp-link C9
Post by: dajg on February 16, 2016, 03:51:36 PM
Hi

I have a TP-link C9 router which handles all the networking side of things connected to a Billion 8800nl in bridged mode which acts as a modem for my FTTC connection.

I am trying to monitor the modem from computers on the network.

I have tried the 2nd cable trick as described in the Zycel modem section and it doesn't work.

I am trying to get advanced routing to work to send all the right packets to the right places.

The IP address of the C9 router is 192.168.1.254
The IP address of the Billion 8800nl modem is 192.168.0.1

On the C9 I went into advanced routing and added the following static route:
Destination Network: 192.168.0.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.255 (255.255.255.0 doesn't work)
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.254

I don't really know what I am doing - any help appreciated.

It would be a lot easier if the Billion was on the same subnet, change its address to 192.168.1.x

A subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 will work.

It was on the same subnet - all the advice was to put it on a different one. If I do change it to say 192.168.1.1 what do I set the advanced routing up as?

A subnet mask of 255.255.254.0 will work.

Error code: 4003
Subnet Mask doesn't match the Destination Network address, please enter again.

when I try that.

Well, it's a Class C network with a Class B netmask, so it's not strictly allowed.

If they are on the same subnet, you don't need advanced routing.

I've tried it on the same subnet (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.254) and it doesn't work just times out when you try and connect. Something to do with sending LAN packets over a WAN interface???

Ah, is there only one LAN port on the 8800NL?

No, there are 4. So LAN4 attaches to the WAN port on the router and you connect LAN1 to a LAN port on the router.

Then if they are in the same subnet, it should just work with no advanced routing.

hi,

sorry to jump in but can I ask on your router did you have to specify ppoe as the wan authentication or if not what settings did you have to use. I am hoping to connect my asus ac87u to the billion 8800nl but just trying to understand the authentication required on the asus wan port so it connects properly. I am on FTTC as well

cheers

Are you on Sky? If so, they use MER not PPPoE

Yeap I get that as yes on sky but would the modem work in bridge mode only. I suppose the question is does the firmware support option 60/61?
Cheers

The modem will, but the question is does the router? The router has to do the authentication if the 8800NL is in bridge mode.

According to this post you need the Merlin firmware http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-broadband-fibre-help/59302-sr102-rt-ac87u-bt-modem.html#post456940

Well i use the rt-ac87u with merlin already which does support dynamic ip with option 60/61 already as I tried a bt modem before along with the asus router wan port configured as required and it authenticated fine and everything worked but the bt modem synced lower than the sr102 so wanted to try another device in modem mode that I can run stats on as well hence the 8800.

Just need to understand/clarify that the correct authentication of dynamic ip plus option 60/61 being sent from the asus over the wan port will work fine with the 8800nl is modem only mode.

Cheers

It will work just the same as the BT modem.

Sounds good but yet to find someone who has done it. I assume but dont actually know but in modem mode I guess you can use any autentication type from the router connecting to the wan port.
Will be giving it a go later in the week so hope it will work..

Sorry, I don't know what you mean by any authentication type. Sky fibre uses MER.

You have to use the correct authentication. You are not authenticating against the modem, you are authenticating against your ISP's BRAS.

Yeap ok I understand. I meant the authentication of the wan port on my asus which if its the same as it is at the mo connected to an eci modem (bt) it will be dynamic ip with option 60/61.
As I understand you are telling me the modem mode of the 8800 will not be relevant as the router is in charge of logging on/authenticating with sky servers etc.
Will give it a go next week..
Cheers

Correct

sorry one more question if you don't mind re connecting for monitoring

if I want to use the 8800 in modem mode and configure the 8800 with an ip of 192.168.1.1 and my asus is on 192.168.1.3 do you need to add a second lan cable from the 8800 back to the asus for monitoring?

so I am assuming lan1 on the 8800 can go to wan port on the asus &
any other spare lan port on the 8800 can go to the asus - for monitoring
thanks!

Yes, if the 8800 is in bridge mode, connect LAN port x on 8800 to LAN port y on asus.

Yes, if the 8800 is in bridge mode, connect LAN port x on 8800 to LAN port y on asus.

ok thanks. I did stumble across this so I hope it will help when the times comes

"I was running a separate LAN cable from the Billion to the Asus to get stats. This was producing intermittent disconnects. I have now set port grouping on the Billion adding Port 1 to the WAN. Now I can only connect the Asus to the internet by using LAN 1 on the Billion into the WAN port of the Asus, and connecting a separate cable from the EWAN port on the Billion to a LAN port on the Asus to get stats!"

would work for me if I can figure it out lol  ::)
