Title: Zoom ADSL X6
Post by: Keyblade92 on March 21, 2008, 10:07:05 PM
Hello everybody, after a few days of my linksys router not working correctly (the internet light would not light up, meaning I could stream through it but not connect to the internet) I started using my USB speedtouch modem with no problems. Today I bought a Zoom ADSL X6 wireless modem router, and after following the set-up steps all is fine except the internet light is red. I am now back at square one - I can stream but not connect. When I try to auto configure the router, the program from the CD can not fine the Zoom router, but my laptops can pick up its signal.

I am now using my USB modem which was supplied over a year ago. I am with orange and upto 8 mbps.

Please help me, I miss wireless internet more than I could have imagined!

David

If the internet light is red, it suggests that (provided the DSL light is solid) the router is synced up with the exchange but there has been a failure with the internet connection - typically a PPP autentication failure caused by having the wrong DSL settings input and/or an incorrect username and password set up in the router.

Hi soms, thanks for your quick reply. Can you advise me how to correctly set up my router manually?

Thanks a lot,

David.

Have you by any chance received any notification from your ISP that they may be making "some changes" to your service?
Theres quite a few of "the larger ISPs" that right now are LLU'ing many exchanges (putting their own kit in rather than using BT's).

Its not uncommon for these users to see problems making a connection.  BT dslams are quite forgiving in what information you put into them, whereas the LLU kit isnt as flexible.

The settings you should have for most ISPs* is listed on the main site:-  How to manually configure a router (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/router.htm)

In particular  double check:-

Protocol/Encapsulation :- PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
Multiplexing method: VC-BASED or VC-Mux

*(unless youre with Be)

Thanks Kitz, I will try to manually configure the router.

----

Tried that, and I just get the error message that the software can not detect the Zoom modem... The router is connected via ethernet, and all lights are on green, except the internet one.

if you type http://10.0.0.2 into internet explore address bar, does it access the setup page ?
username = admin
password= zoomadsl

Hi setecio, all I get is Problem Loading Page with a

The connection has timed

The server at 10.0.0.2 is taking too long to respond.

error message. I have just found my old linksys router, and when setting that up, all the lights are green except the internet light. Does this shed any light on the problem?

What I find strange is my USB modem is working, but not the routers...

check control panel - network connections and check that your local area connection is not marked as disabled, if it is right click on it - enable.

Also check your software firewall settings, and maybe disable it for 2 minutes (the outer will have a hardware firewall anyway to protect you during that time)

Hi, under the Network connections I have;

Dial Up

Speedtouch Connection
Disconnected, Firewalled
SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP

LAN or High-Speed Internet

Local Area Connection
Connected, Firewalled
VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter

When I disable my firewall, the light is still red and the ADSL router can not be found.

The model is a 5590. The default gateway is 192.168.1.1

When I type ping 10.0.0.2, I get this -

C:\Documents and Settings\The Family>ping 10.0.0.2

Pinging 10.0.0.2 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 91.109.0.1: Destination net unreachable.
Reply from 91.109.0.1: Destination net unreachable.
Reply from 91.109.0.1: Destination net unreachable.
Reply from 91.109.0.1: Destination net unreachable.

Ping statistics for 10.0.0.2:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

>> The default gateway is 192.168.1.1

You should be able to get to the router interface then via typing  http://192.168.1.1 (http://192.168.1.1) into a browser window to be able to manually configure it.

(or just click that link above ^ )

Hi Kitz, I can use that page to configure the linksys (where I get no internet light at all) but on my Zoom  router I get a

The connection has timed out.

The server at 192.168.1.1 is taking too long to respond.

I have just printed off a document on a networked printer through my linksys router, which will stream music over the network, which the Zoom will not do. Is this because the zoom has not been set up correctly yet?

You might want to look at resetting the router to defaults and starting again but trying to use the web interface rather than the set up CD.

The user guide should state how to reset to defaults. Normally it involves holding a paper clip in a reset switch somewhere on the back.

Im also wondering what IP address the local machines have.

It finds the linksys interface ok using 192.168.1.1

as setecio said using ipconfig /all may give us a bit more info

- or perhaps try hardcoding an IP address in the range of 10.0.0.x into the network settings on the local machine.

Sucess! I rester the router and then entered the http://10.0.0.2/ address. I then entered the password (zoomadsl) and username (admin). Now I'm on the web wirelessly again!

Thanks for all the help kitz, I think I'll stick around on this website, I can learn so much more from it!

Thanks to everybody,
David!

yw - although I dont think I actually did anything  :D

Combination of replies and suggestions - although if truth be told it was probably setecio that did the hardwork looking up the router IP and the manual.

>> I think I'll stick around on this website

Please do - and before long you may even be able to help out and answer the odd Q too :)

You're right of course - Big thanks to setecio aswell.

However, now I can not connect to the internet through a wired connection, but only through wireless. Any ideas?

You might need to reboot if swapping from the linksys to the zoom as the IP range addresses are totally different.

Also check the LAN TCP/IP properties to see i it is set up for a fixed or automatic IP setup, choose automatic.

It's all fixed now! I set the connection to get a dynamic IP address, and now all is working.

Thanks everybody!
