Title: Survey - who's what?
Post by: Weaver on December 27, 2015, 08:19:44 AM
* Who is on ADSL1 / ADSL2+ / FTTC + VDSL2 / FTTP / satellite?

* Do you have a long line?

* Do you use channel bonding over multiple lines ?

* IPv6 ?
--

Would you be kind enough to shout out and reply to this thread?

I'd just like to get an idea of the numbers (not particularly scientific). ???

ADSL 1 (IP Stream Max)
5300m, 57dB, Exchange only line
Single line, no bonding or anything
Single fixed IPv4 address

Currently been knocked back to a 12dB target noise margin, so synching at 3424.  Normally just under 4500 on 6dB Interleaved.

ADSL 2+
Exch 2.75 km (1.71 m)
Att 46 dB
SNR 3.1 dB
Connection 8065 kbps; Max 8820; Current 6.69 Mbps
IPV 4 Dynamic IP

FTTC available but offers but
FTTC Range A (Clean)        33.2   23.9
FTTC Range B (Impacted)   26.2   13.1

The PCP is, say, 800 metres.

ISTM that benefit from changing could be marginal.

ADSL 1 (IP Stream Max)
3970m,(2.47 Miles) 45.5dB, Exchange only line

Hi there,

FTTC + VDSL2
Approx 750 metres from street cabinet (according to BT Engineer)
Single line - no bonding
Single Dynamic IPv4 address allocated by ISP (Uno/Daisy Communications)

Speeds : 39996kbps down / 5750kbps up

And that's that !!

Lets see

ADSL Max 1800 meters to local exchange sync rate DS 6200 kbps US 348 kbps attenuation 37.8dB

VDSL2 1000 meters to FTTC cab and the head end exchange (fibre Exchange) is 4300 meters away sync rate DS 34700 kbps US 6400 kbps attenuation 24.8dB

single line no bonding IP4  Dynamic IP

@newtronstar   - dim question,  :-[  do you have two lines?

I can answer on behalf of N*Star . . .

Originally it was an ADSLMax circuit but when VDSL2 (FTTC) eventually became available the circuit was upgraded.  :)

VDSL2 roughly 650 metres to dslam

single line, ipv4 (I really should complete my ipv6 certification :P)

current sync is 43999/8496 snrm of 7.5/4.3 and banded, G.INP mk 2 enabled downstream only, minimal interleave (16)

Code: [Select]
VDSL Band Status U0 U1 U2 U3 U4 D1 D2 D3
  Line Attenuation(dB):         7.8 41.9 62.0 N/A N/A 18.8 51.6 80.5
Signal Attenuation(dB):         7.8 41.2 60.9 N/A N/A 28.2 51.2 N/A

@loonylion are you doing that HE.Net or SIXXs thing? To get your Blue Peter Badge. I haven't got very far, just a load of free points simply for having working native IPv6 already.

They dug the pavement up outside our house for the power to the cabinet

* I'm on ADSL2 (not ADSL2+) ( - thanks to Burakkucat for the tip )

* Long lines, 4.55 mi / 7.32

* Three lines, IP-bonded together - see http://aa.net.uk/kb-broadband-bonding.html

* IPv6 (native, delivered by PPP)

FTTC/VDSL2
450m approx to cabinet
Currently on 'silly'* sync of 78.8 down / 20 up
No bonding
Had IPv6 working fine during Plusnet trial, currently single fixed IPv4 only.

*'Silly' sync happened after a power cut nearly 2 weeks ago, a more normal figure would be around 72 down but I've managed to hold the 78.8 with SNR at 4dB, occasionally dropping to 3 without excessive reported ES/SES thanks, I believe, to G.INP (active both up and down on my line) using Fritz!Box 7490 (Lantiq VRX288) to Huawei (Broadcom) cabinet.

...and another:

ADSL2+
Distance as the cable runs 2.1Km, made up of 2.0Km exchange to Cabinet and then 100m of D-Side to the property: all underground bar the final run up the pole outside house and drop wire.

Current Stats:
Downstream
Sync: 14568 Kbps
Att'n: 36.0 dB
SNRmargin 3.4 dB (on a 3.0 target as it has been since ADSL2+ arrived in 2011)

Upstream
Sync: 888kbps - capped at this due to interleaving
Att'n: 14.6 dB
SNRmargin:  12.3  dB

Single BT type line, single dynamic IPv4 address

Superfast/FTTC not available and area not included under the BDUK program.
Virgin not available: - its a village, not really Virgin's territory!

Currently on FTTC
Line around 500m from the cabinet and has a 16.1 Attn
Currently on 40000kbps/9999kbps service though the attainable sync is currently 59048Kbps/20752Kbps (varies - you can check my stats on MDWS)
Single dynamic IP4 address.

The line used to be ADSL2+ and ADSL before that. At around 3.5Km from the exchange I used to get roughly:

ADSL2+: 6000/1200kbps (attn 43dB)
ADSL: 4500/288kbps (attn: 41dB)

Previously ADSL then ADSL2 when 21CN introduced. Approx 5km line, 53dB line attenuation, finally coaxed to 3.5Mbps.

Currently FTTC, Huawei cabinet, HG612 modem G.INP active. Line attenuation 20.4dB, attainable 47.5Mbps DS, 10.27Mbps US, actual 39.999Mbps DS, 9.57Mbps US. SNRM 9.6dB DS,  5.9dB US.

Re FTTP...
I'm currently posting this message from a Gigaclear FTTP line.
There is really nothing to say - this particular line is on their 100/100Mbps package and that is what you get 24/7.
Interestingly any speed test using a UK based server seems unable to correctly handle upload speeds of this magnitude. You need to find a test server in Holland which has a lot of FTTP to get a more representative result - but then the answer is always around 100Mbps so there is no need to even bother.
Pings to google.com are 5ms.

Obviously there are no line stats and the Optical line termination/router unit (a Genexis Hybrid with 4 off 1Gbps ports made in, yes, Holland again) is totally locked down to the user apart from the wireless settings and port forward stuff plus some parental controls.....So the router GUI is pretty sparse!

FTTC + VDSL2
250m to cabinet, attenuation 9.7, 79999/19999 sync.
No bonding
dynamic IPv4 only

FTTC + VDSL2
100m to cabinet, but I think it is 0.4mm copper, behaving like a 150m+ line.
Attenuation 8.6dB; running at 80/20; attainable 107/32
No bonding
Static IPV4

If I reverted back to exchange-based DSL, I'd have:
ADSL2+
2km to exchange
Speeds of 12/1.

FTTC + VDSL2
~ 105m to cabinet outside exchange.
Sync 79999/19999, attainable 136836/42684
G.INP downstream active (line has always been somewhat noisy, with very disappointing ADSL2+Annex M performance).
