Title: opening linked pages
Post by: jj4091 on March 15, 2008, 08:02:30 AM
Hi I have just discovered the site & this is my first post. I am quite a computer novice & think that I have altered some setting or other by accident, but cannot find what it was to rectify the problem, which is that when I click on a link from any page on the web to a new site then the new page opens as a 3" x 3" version of the top l.h.corner of the page & I have to click on maximise to open the full page & I am finding this a little frustrating. I am using windows xp & ie7. I would be grateful for any advice anyone could give me. ??? :-[

Hi, and welcome to the forum :)

With IE, hover your mouse over the corners of the window until it turns into a double headed arrow, and click and drag the corners to where you want them, then close the window by going to file/exit (not by clicking on the red X).  It's one of those frustrating things about internet explorer that you can't set it so that new windows automatically open maximised.

Hi jj

Welcome to the forum.

Have you considered using Firefox as your browser? It is free to download and will import all your IE bookmarks & other settings. It will run alongside IE so you can always go back to IE if you come across one of the tiny minority of web pages that don't display correctly in Firefox.

The advantages of FF are that it is less resource hungry than IE and tends not to be attacked by hackers as frequently as IE.

Hehe Astral, my second thought (or was it the first) was to recommend Firefox.

hi jj

another way is to right click you IE shortcut, click properties then where it says RUN towards the bottom of the box, change it to maximised, then click ok.

good luck   :)

Paul, that only works for the first IE window you open, not subsequent popup ones.

Floydy, does it not work in subsequent windows in IE  if  once on the linked window which is not fully opened you then do the above as Paul explained, THEN,  stretch the linked window to the size you want it,   close the original window, and then close the link........          thereafter when you open any link window it will be the size you want.    I THINK  I remember that  !!!!   Of course I'd concur that Firefox would eliminate all this    ::)

Or you could get yourself a decent browser, Opera. The only browser worth having....... ;) >:D >:D

Thank you all so much, scottiesmum's suggestion cured the problem, easy when you know how ;D, but I still don't know what I did to cause it.

Hi there, too late as usual.

But as a matter of interest, there is a small program called " Windows AutoSizer 1.61 " which will also do the job.

This will also work with all and any window that you open, once you set it on a problem type window it then automatically re-size it next time.

Internet Explorer will remember the size of the last window to be closed, and open any new windows that size accordingly. If you simply maximise the window it doesn't remember that, and only remembers the size of the un-maximised window.

This is a double-edged sword, as yes, it's nice that it remembers what size you like your browsing window, BUT if the last window to be closed happens to be say a small popup window (which lots of download sites seem to open for a file download, in order to get around the Information Bar popping up), then IE will remember this as "your IE window preference", which of course is nonsense!!

Easily fixed by following Kate's advice though - open a single IE window, resize it to how you want (NOT maximised!), then close it. Next time you start IE, it will be the same size as you left it.

AAAAAAH! Thanks Chris, so I may not be as stupid as I thought. I sometimes if I get pop ups & I close them by right clicking on their name in the bottom tool bar(the one that shows which programs are running or pages open) & then close them without knowing what they are, as they are running in the background. ;D
