Title: What Stormy Weather?
Post by: dave.m on March 10, 2008, 11:15:30 AM
Where’s the storm?

I’ve been watching news reports all morning about the severe weather, but just 12 miles east of Blackpool Tower this is what it is like at 11 am today.

From our living room window
(https://forum.kitz.co.uk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi121%2Fdavesnaps%2FMarch10th2008001.jpg&hash=15dedaf1e60c5557f209664d09ef24d6c81fc94f)

Form our back door step
(https://forum.kitz.co.uk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi121%2Fdavesnaps%2FMarch10th2008002.jpg&hash=20fbcd5087014bb190bf98b8ac915563aaa0ed65)

From the side of the hose
(https://forum.kitz.co.uk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi71.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi121%2Fdavesnaps%2FMarch10th2008004.jpg&hash=6e544a11fb5f4870ae8103c447a1485fae643e57)

All are looking west towards Blackpool.
I have just taken the dog for a walk and did not need a coat on, just a sweat shirt.

dave

Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside! (Well not far away!) ;D

We had a bit of wind and rain here in Norfolk earlier this morning, but nothing to get excited about.

it seems to be the south and Wales which has been hardest hit, although I don't think the storms have been half as bad as expected.  We've got lovely sunshine and little wind at the moment

You should try it down here in the south-west. Although apparently not too bad where I am, in mid-Devon, it's pretty wild in the coastal areas. The railway line that runs past my house is closed and I've seen maintenance gangs with a chipper working, so I guess they've had the wrong kind of trees on the line.

We are getting the tail end  here, I should think the Gulf of Gascony  (Bay of Biscay) is rather rough !   We were basking only a few days ago ....and we should be basking again by Thursday ! 8)

No storm here in SW Scotland...............flat calm, sun coming through now and possibly the warmest day we have had this year.
Pouring rain up till about 10.30 am, lots of standing water on the narrow rural roads around here but all drying up now.

Just been reading this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/hampshire/7286972.stm about a tanker in difficulties in the English Channel.

Heavy rain here in Sheffield from about 5am to 9am,then sunshine,a bit breezy.I think the met office give you the worst case scenario so they cover their backs.Remember the hurricane in the south east 1987.I was working in london at the time.Came home thursday evening, all was fine. There was nothing in Sheffield, went back monday morning, could not believe the devestation, massive trees in hyde park uprooted and on their side.
I remember Michael Fish when questioned about the possibility of hurricane,he replied NO absolutly no chance. :-X

We've been having gales here in Kent, and this morning the lights kept on flickering but didn't actually fail. At one stage it blew out my internet connection. :(

What, you mean you actually get paid?
I would have thought you would pay Kitz for the "honour" of being a mod on her site.

************************

Wind and gales here in Birmingham West Midlands, early hours of this morning I thought the windows and roof were going to blow out.
Although it sort of calmed down about 5AM.

Last week we had deliveries of re-cycling box's, most people left them at the front of their property and the wind blew them all, up, down and around the street all night. (what a racket).

Just north of Brighton - I've retrieved our wheelie bin, the end of the garden is flooded, the wind is howling.

Wind is picking up again down west. Worse to come by all accounts.

[In the south-west] we had some really high winds last night, don't remember anything like it for a long while.

I only had the window open a jar for some air but it had the door rattling and clothes swaying. Luckily and somewhat surprisingly no fallen trees and the power stayed on which was a nice change compared to past experiences of that sort of weather.

I found out, tonight, that half my village was without electricity for most of today. I seem to be living a charmed existence vis-a-vis the weather.

I can hear the wind now, so it must be blowing pretty hard. Normally I don't hear a thing.

I remember one time it was a high voltage overhead line which was at fault - I walked  down the road and could see one of the un-insulated, cables sagging a bit and when the wind caught it it made it sway against  one of the other cables, making a cracking sound, sending blue sparks across the field and making the power fail for a good few seconds  :D

I don't suppose the weather will be so rough tonight and I am in the Midlands at the moment until later on Thursday.

I hope to come home to find everything in one piece.

Came across 2 trees brought down, one across a road near Brudall, bombarded with broken twigs and branches half the morling, soaked, wind swept, green with tree gunk. constant texts all day, Damage report, can you attend ?....... :rain:

Near home damaged gas pipes being worked on, slight suspicion on the recent tremor

You've just reminded me of the winter of 1976 when I was walking along a Devon lane at night and bumped into a big fat cable at chest height. I nearly carped myself, thinking it was a high voltage electricity cable, but it turned out to be a telephone cable, so heavy with ice, that it had sagged almost to the ground.

Looking at the weather on the Met Office site the severe weather warnings which yesterday were for the south west and south wales only have now moved on to the rest of England, Wales and southern Scotland...

Everywhere but southern England which is good news in terms of avoiding further damage and flooding although I heard on spotlight that more rain was forecast (we can only get spotlight because we are at the bottom of a hill which blocks the local transmitter including points west)

So it looks like you folks in the north west might get a different picture tomorrow  the ones dave provided  ::)

Staying in Staffs though, the weather wont be to brilliant here either though :(

Haven't you got a bed to go to  :-X

In Birmingham at the moment it's a little windy but not much, although rain is forecast for later today.

Yes, snow on the phone lines, I used to like hitting the cable to loosen the snow to see it shoot back into the air.
It never really worked as there was usually too much snow.  >:D

I've had some of that charmed existence. Twice recently we have had BT cable lengths dug up and stolen by gypsies resulting in most of the village without phones. I wasn't affected either time.

I wish you hadn't posted those nice sunny pictures yesterday DaveM - from what the weather forecasters are saying we are going to get the gales in the North West tonight and I think you must have caused it by drawing attention to our good fortune on Monday!

>> how do I get my photos on here

Photos up to 200 kB in size can be uploaded directly to the site, but for more flexibility you can save them to an external picture-sharing site and just post the url here. I use Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) but there are plenty of others. Then in your message here you just click the 'Insert image' icon and copy the url address of the picture in between the two tags.

It is an absolutely lovely day here today, soft and mild, nice and sunny, and warm.
Grass got the first mow of the year................and the car got it's first wash of the year. I was nicely surprised at what colour it was underneath all the mud and filth.........I had almost forgotten.

But, at my age these two jobs are enough for one day, so can now get down to some important surfing  ;)
