Title: Dark nightmare caused by grandson
Post by: renluop on October 01, 2015, 10:30:17 AM
Parents were both out working or at meetings. Trying to be helpful early teenage son decided to update the home desktop from 7 to 10. From what I hear it doesn't seem he made a backup! :'(

Now parents are completely confused as they are unfamiliar with 10 and cannot find files  and.......

Those could contain important work items.

Helpful suggestions for them, guys?

Win10 has an option in the recovery options menu to restore the machine back to its original state.

This option is available for 30 days after you perform the update to Win10.

See http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rollback-from-windows-10 (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rollback-from-windows-10)
I would recommend doing a backup of the machine first using Macrium Free.  http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx)
[Very good Backup Software. Free version will only restore to original machine but is fully working otherwise. Have used it and is very good software]

The win10 Rollback has been reported to not always work smoothly. It did work for me recently with no major problems. Hence the backup for insurance.
Macrium will perform a full disk backup which will allow the disk to be restored to the original state if there is a problem.
Do not run any 'fixes' the are supposed to automagically make things 'work' as they cause more problems than they fix.

If you have any questions please ask.

I'd ask them to try and persevere if the upgrade went OK. And ask errant grandson to assist them!
A good starting point is to press F1 to get help.

On all the upgrades I've seen, the taskbar is essentially unchanged, as is the desktop.

If not already on they may find it helpful to turn on some desktop icons:
Right-click in an empty area of desktop, choose Personalise.
Click on Themes then Desktop Icon Settings and tick the required boxes - I use them all.

I've not experienced this myself. But my gf struggled to find some of her files and programs after updating to W10. They are still there but it might need a longer look to find them.

It now is that the story told me was wrong.! Dad had set computer to upgrade while it was idle and had set time switch. Son had come in and turned on computer to do home work, and unwittingly started the upgrade. :-[
