Title: Something to feed the soul in our techie world :)
Post by: AArdvark on September 05, 2015, 02:16:48 PM
From an article on the BBC News Website, I have discovered yet another thing the BBC is doing.
Original Article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34150322 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34150322)

A site that is attempting to catalogue every oil painting in the UK national collection.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/)

So much the BBC does but fails to advertise very well.
This is the reason behind the BBC misunderstanding all the attacks it gets.
When from their point of view they do so much in the spirit of their founder John Reith's vision.

Its staggering that so much art is just simply gathering dust.

Amongst local councils, Manchester City Council owns the most valuable collection - of 46,347 pieces, worth some £347 million. Of those, 1,017 (2.1%) are on display.

This was approached some years ago on local news but got no real response from any side.
The real reason for all the hidden art is that councils etc convinced themselves/were convinced that 'saving' art looked good and was a good investment.
As time went on the ability to admit what they had spent and to sell anything without looking desperate or uncultured Philistines meant that they simply hid it away.
The recent odd spates of selling off has been driven by desperate financial straits, increasing Insurance costs and a hope that the political climate is in their favour for once.

The main downside for me is that no-one gets to see it, which would at least be some societal use for the spend and equally the efforts of the artists who are forgotten becuase they are not seen.

[OT: Can the site support UK English 'spel chucking' it really throws you off when in verbose mode and you get US English errors.  :D :D ;)  ]

Is that site support or browser support?   I'm not aware that it comes from the site, but there may be something I missed deep in SMF config.
I could be entirely wrong, but I thought it came from the browser.

I was under the impression it came from your end :)
I have had a British English Spell dictionary installed.

It appears 'had' was the correct word to use  :D
I will re-install ........ Sorry  :-[ :-[  :paperbag:
