Title: Site running slow
Post by: kitz on September 24, 2006, 09:48:08 PM
Heads up guys, that for some reason this forum is running particulary slow tonight.

The site is hosted across 4 servers..  which server you land on is kinda pot luck, but investigations from this end would appear that server 02 is coming under some strain.

Therefore if you hit server 02.... then unlucky and you go nowhere fast ... :(
If you wait a couple of mins and try refreshing the page, then hopefully you will land on one of the other 3 servers which should then serve the page.

Ive already contacted my ISP about this, who are supposed to be looking into it.

For some reason though, I seem to keep hitting server 02.. its almost like its sticking to me :/

It's still happening this morning unfortunately. Yesterday I had a couple of occasions in which I was using the forum normally and it suddenly seized up when I was trying to post a message.

Eric

(And it happened when I tried to post this one too)

I've been trying all morning to no avail, but seems to be OK now. Or did I just hit a lucky server thiis once. We shall see.

Post by: kitz on September 25, 2006, 02:07:49 PM
Yeah I get the same thing..  hit a good server and it will run ok,  and then hit a really bad patch.
I'll try put a script up on the bottom of the page in a bit.. so we can check which server we're hitting.

Problem Ive been having with reporting this, is that some users and PN say they arent seeing any problems. grrrr.

ok guys..
sorry maybe not a good idea to try edit a script when site goes slow.

*just put everything back to normal*

my fault if you just got a pile of errors.

sorted...
Its not prettified but... details should display on the bottom of each page now.
been connecting via 01 and 03 and it seems ok.
*touch wood*

I'm a bit surprised that PN are saying that they can't see a problem. At mid-day today they circulated this advisory:

We are currently investigating reports from customers advising that their CCGI website is unavailable or timing out.

Customer sites hosted on this platform may find that their website is intermittently unavailable whilst this problem exists.

Our network engineers are working on this at the moment, and will provide a further update shortly.

lmfao...  now theres a point!

He did seem to know about loads and balancing and sites..
maybe it was the builders.

Actually whoever answered did seem to take me seriously which is a bit more than the rant I had elsewhere on sunday, even called me madam, they do normally ask for a username though?

The funniest response I had was one night when I rang up quite late at night and they obviously must have been quiet...  got asked my username...  and the response was
"What the kitz that posts, and the one with the site?"...  erm  yes!  ..
he must have then turned to his collegue and I heard him say
"Hey mike (or whatever it was).... hey...hey..  guess what... Im talking to kitz".
mr_chris can confirm this convo..  as the pair of us were in stitches at this guys enthusism....  awww bless.

Hello, This is Fogy double glazing, we will be around on Saturday to complete your order, as per phone call......

Actually this is the first time (well 2nd really but I got the Page Cannot be found message last time when I went for a preview) then lost all my text "and connection" now even forgot what I said........mmmmmmmmmmm

Oh, yes, yesterday I could only get here via the main forum link: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/

The link from my e-mail :http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?action=post;topic=159.0;num_replies=11
only gave me the page not found message.

But it seems to be working okay now. (not doing a preview again just in case) DAME ERROR

I am posting this from the prone submissive position Kitz (O Famous One).

I didn't look in here yesterday, looks like I missed all the fun of the slow forum (have you been sharing the CA server?). It's all working fine for me right now.

Yep when it works its works ok..  until you hit the server thats being a rite royal PITA :/

It should be..  Do you have a button at the top right of your post that says *modify* next to the (https://forum.kitz.co.uk/Themes/KitzTheme/images/buttons/modify.gif) icon.

d'oh I dont beeeeeelieve this..

Ive spent ages trying to suss out what was going on...  and have only just realised.

It should only be this particular announcement section of the forum that you cant edit.
Thats because the permissions are different on here, and with it being an announcement forum, only mods and admin could do such things as start new topics.

You should be able to have normal permissions in every other section apart from this particular one.

Mae wee, my little french friend.

Actually! talking of things french?
Do you remember a song that basically had the words (sounded like) She Tem or Cha Tem running almost as a background chorus.

It came out around the 80s or early 90s.
Only I am trying to find the "proper name" of it, without much luck.

Any help or assistance, will needlessly be well appreciated.

Thanks for scratching your head Kitz, and it's nice to know that everybody seems to love me.

Je t'aime aussi.

How come the old chap can edit his in here then? Is he an elite member?
(I expect he's paid into the slush fund.)

EDIT: I have the facility now - you must have tweaked things. And I didn't cough up for the slush fund either.

I am an elite member, I am.

SMS has a lot of tweakable things that you can do (far more than any other forum software that Ive seen)...
Where I was going wrong is I was looking at the global settings which were fine, and thats why I couldnt see anything earlier.  ???

Once I realised that the reason you couldnt edit, was only in this forum because it was an "annoucement forum" and therefore it had separate rules which applied only to this section..  then I was able to tweak the rules locally for this section only too.

It's still very hit & miss whether you get a connection or not. Have PN given any credible explaination as to what's wrong yet; they sure haven't fixed it.

Re my email that took a month to arrive. Where was it hiding all that time?
Title: Re: Site running slow
Post by: kitz on September 27, 2006, 06:12:04 PM
Im still nagging them about it astral.
They assigned more connections to the server, but missed the point I'd been making about how sometimes it was a nightmare to be able to connect and also the fact that more often than not I seemed to be shunted towards ccgi02.

Since putting the server script up, Ive noticed that if I hit any other the other servers, then the site will run fine, and can be ok..  but ccgi02 seems to be the one running slow and has a much higher load average.
They have changed something on the loadbalancer today, but as colin pointed out, it seemed like the load balancer was working in reverse and trying to shunt everyone on ccgi02.  :D

PN are still saying they cant seem to replicate this as it all seems to be running ok from there end..  but point being..  yeah hit a server thats fine and things will run sweet.  Im sure that the times when I cant connect are those when Im hitting ccgi02 which is too busy to accept anymore connections.

----------

ok.. just as I was typing this, just checked and have a reply to a question directed at one of the more senior engineers.

With regard to CCGI - we have signoff for more hardware and indeed it's on the Development workstack to buy and build additional servers for the platform.

With regard to CCGI02, we have recognised it to be a problem and over the last few days one of my engineers has been working to identify what's going on with it - he has seen the slowdowns and can see a pattern to them and he's currently investigating what's going on with it.  He's also been doing some tweaking to the way the load balancer works to try and make the platform more... well, balanced!

He and I will continue to work on the open CCGI slowness problem and we'll report back when anything conclusive has been identified.

So it seems they have finally acknowledged a problem with ccgi02  :(
I knew that there had been mention of new hardware for the ccgi platform a couple of months ago, and iirc it is/was next in line after the new mail servers.

If I can return to the actual subject of this thread :police: it seems to me that I always get connected to ccgi02 initially, and if I stay there everything works OK. But often when I click on a link it moves me to a different server, and that's when things begin to seize up again. I suspect that's going to happen with this message, because I'm now on ccgi01 after starting on ccgi02.

(Later) And I was right. It did seize up. This time I'm posting from ccgi02 and I bet it's going to work.

Morning all

Well keep everything crossed! The server seems to be going at proper speed again. ;D

Spoke too soon. :'( :'( :'(

Update; After extensive testing, well 10 minutes of hitting the refresh button, the forum does seem to be its old self again, except for very occasional glitches. It is being distributed between all four servers as it should. :)

Update to update; It seems to get stuck when you stay on one page for a minute or two. :(

mhmm... something Ive noticed too..  stay on a page too long and when you refresh it tries to shunt you back to another server possibly ccg02 again and then the page doesnt load is slow?

I wonder if this is the problem fixed?

I just logged on "instantly" and made 2 posts/replies and no problems.

Also, still not getting e-mail response to this topic, but I will now check the settings again....
Title: Re: Site running slow

phil.. the notifications to this topic may be settings at this end. I'll check in a mo.
This particular forum threads have different permissions than the "main section", since its classed as announcements... in a similar way which accordian noticed that there was no edits.

Been having a look around at hosting elsewhere for the site...  theres no other isps that seem to do included cgi.
The other problem is the main (non cgi) site gets a fair bit of hammer - over 60,000 hits most days, just for the content... add on the cgi/php/sql and well....... :/
So its too big for even basic hosting, nvm ISP hosting.  I used to have paid hosting with another company which I "outgrew" :(
Title: Re: Site running slow

Phil..  changed the settings ..  it was the *non standard* announcements, and the reason why it wasnt following the global rules.

Quote
This morning's reboot of the CGI storage platform was completed successfully and we have since seen load return to normal levels.

Whilst we are satisfied the underlying causes of this problem are now resolved, we will leave service status on amber over the next few days whilst we continue to monitor the platform.
