Title: Who has access to the IPv6 Internet
Post by: Weaver on August 05, 2015, 06:12:31 PM
Say hello please.

Tell us what kind of access: native or tunnelled (Teredo or Proto 41 or AYIYA/AICCU or other)

And who's your ISP and what hardware you are using: router, modem and so on

I believe someone said recently that some of the big boys, including the BT Retail ISP, have finally delivered IPv6 to users. Is that correct?

I wonder if some users are now using IPv6 to browse the web and are visiting Google and Facebook without even knowing anything has changed. :-)

using a HE tunnel whilst waiting for sky to activate ipv6.

@Chrysalis  - So, Sky is set to do the right thing! Another big name. HE is Proto 41, I believe, is that correct? Are you using a Sky router? What's handling your tunnel for you?

sky are set to rollout ipv6 during 2015 yes.

BT are also testing as well.

I am using a asus ac68 with custom firmware and thats the endpoint for the tunnel.

Just to play devils advocate  >:D

Why the rush to switch to IPv6?

because ipv4 has ran out, so we need everyone in their homes to be on ipv6 so ipv6 can be used for internet services.

IPv4 hasn't run out (There are some US establishments with totally unused class A IP's) and NAT was invented to help with the IPv4 shortage. If IPv6 isn't adopted by ISP's then available unique IPv4 IP addresses will run out at some point but that is no reason for peeps in their homes to need IPv6 now or in the near future. Don't foget IPv6 and IPv4 (tunelling) can run together which is how things work currently.

IF on the other hand you want everyone with every device they own (fridges , toasters, etc) to have its own IP and be accessable from the internet by that IP then yes you need IPv6.

I can't see ISP letting you have static IP's for free even though with IPv6 IP addresses will be plentiful!

its effectively ran out at the highest level, yes many institutions have spare ips on their allocated ranges, but that doesnt mean its all ok.

Its got to the point where isp's have brought out other isp's simply to get hold of their ip ranges.

Now ISP's have started using CG-NAT, its definitely time for IPv6

As an example hetzner now only provide 1 ipv4 per rented server (to new customers).

So only two IPv6 users out there?

Me and Chrysalis. CrazyTeeka presumably. (?)

A poor turnout from Kitizen land, a bit worse than I had expected. I assumed the results would be biased on the high side because of the overly high abundance of techies amongst the Kitizens.

I think the problem may be that its only very recently that BT have started issuing some IPv6 addresses, same with Zen.   Also the majority of ISPs use dynamic IPs so you just get what youre given.

Plusnet started an IPv6 trial a couple of years ago and you could opt to go on the trial if you put your name forward iirc Chrys was one of those trialists.
However whilst there are quite a few of us on here with Plusnet, I think quite a lot of the more 'techie' amongst us have paid a tiny bit extra for a static IP (which is IPv4).  The fact that we have bought a static IP means that we have likely done so in order to configure our network in a certain way and in some respects are possibly less likely to want to go playing with IPv6.

here is my HE ipv6 tbb graph. I am using one of the london nodes.

This is a live graph.

So there is a constant spiking of latency but performance so far is generally good, I dont feel the latency spikes on things like ssh use.

The niche ISPs that I have on my list who offer IPv6 are perhaps very business-oriented then.

Aquiss
Idnet
Bogons
Enta
Goscomb
Watchfront
... and then I forget

Then the tunnel providers are
sixxs
HE (Hurricane Electric)

and the Teredo protocol, as offered in Winx boxes, provided via HE
