Title: How Can You Send Yourself Spam Mail.
Post by: tickmike on February 25, 2008, 10:06:38 PM
My wife has had a spam email from herself  :'(.

Yes your guess is right, it's for 'viagera' .

Looking at the source code of the email, the sending Ip comes from Russia and you are led to beleave that it's from a Canadian drug company , from the code I can see they have use a link to google to get the web page to come up when you click the hyper link.."Very Crafty".
In the email source code there is a gmail return address and not the one in the Canadian web site.

I remember reading somewhere that they can do this linking to your own email address.

Don't know if this may jog anyones memory:

There was a very good program on radio4 a week or so back about this. I only half listened to the program but the subject matter was exactly on how these e-mails work (and why they work), can't find it on the bbc web site, and I'm not sure if it was part of bbc click

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/default.stm

I know some programs have transcripts dating back someway, I've had a look and it wasn't the "you and yours" program.

(other wise my 1st reaction in reply to the title was to post that some postoffices sell tins of the stuff as well as juffy bag's...........)

It will make a mess when the postman puts it through the letter box, if the jiffy bag leaks....

Its quite common for some spammers to do this,  as a way to avoid certain spam filters you may have set up..
After all you're hardly likely to filter mail from yourself.

Its actually easy to do this. I could send you an e-mail pretending to be bill gates.. or who-ever.
- Theres a clue here:- http://www.kitz.co.uk/tech/telnet.htm... but you could also do the same thing using other email software.
The one thing you cant get around though is the authentication which will show the originating IP etc in the email header.
