I have always been able to make & save documents but suddenly, after saving them they disappear. There is no problem saving additions to documents already created it is just new documents that are the problem. Can anyone help please?

Are they going to your Onedrive?

yep or the default location has also changed.
Mine did so out of the blue once and I couldnt find the document I'd just saved, until I realised they were in my temp files :/

You can find where a document is about to be saved by choosing the 'Save As' option.
When you get the option to save it will display where it is saving to. (See Example from Windows 7, below)

Windows 8.x will operate in the same manner.

Thank you Dray & all who replied to me. Yes, I found them in my One Drive so I have now transferred them to my documents folder. How odd that this should suddenly happen. One of the mysteries of Windows 8.1!

Some software incl Microsoft's ;D changes your default location when saving documemts/files.
It is trying to be helpful by remembering your last used location & changes the defualt location.
Happens in all versions of windows.
Never did get to the botton of which particular programs do this and when.
It is inconsistent and will appear to be random.
I tend to use 'Save as' to keep an eye on this and have also been surprised by a 'sudden' change of location ???

I still had a problem trying to transfer from One Drive using'send to documents'. All it did was to make a copy & still retained it in One Drive so I used cut & paste which solved the problem for the documents I had lost. In future I will keep an eye on it & at least I know where they are. Many thanks for your help

'Send to' is a copy process. [To be non-destructive is MUST retain the original]
Needed to do a 'Move' which is the same as a 'cut & paste' in the end.
