Well, I been running the RTM of Vista SP1 on my three machines, and damned if I can spot any differences. Definitely no perceptible change in performance. And this was in development when Vista itself was released AIUI. What the heck did they do?
-
.... and all those peeps out there using BIOS emulation to activate vista wont be able to use it any more :(
i dont think it has the ability to run in lower functionality mode with sp1 on either .... if you installed a RTM vista and the 30 days ran out, you could just run IE, type explorer in the addrss bar and it'd come to life.
(quite a scary pic DrTeeth!!) ;)
-
There have been some people who say they have noticed about a 10% increase, however 10% to mere mortals may not be noticeable, but to a gamer, that's probably a different story.
-

Cough, cough; not true.
Glad you like the piccy...took it when I was in a good mood.
-
Hmm its interesting that SP1 is so far looking rather disappointing. A performance increase would have been very welcome as Vista just comes across as being clumsy with times when things run fast and times when things hang or grind to a halt for no apparent reason.
I got a little irritated when after only running it for less than a week I had to perform the shut down sequence twice before Vista would actually decide to do it.
We will have to wait and see for the final SP1 verdict, it can't be to much longer before a final release?
When it is released I am sure you good people with Vista will give it a whir and see if it makes life easier or plain harder :D
-
Vista SP1 has been RTMd and that version is readily available from 'the usual sources' ;).
-
Cough, cough; not true.
this happened on all the machines :hmm: we tried it on with the 1st sp release.
i wonder what was different? later 'release'? cant imagine they would have taken it out tho
-
Will SP1 be a downloadable component, so I can put it on a CD and send it to someone on dialup ?

Yes.

There is an "overview" document available from Microsoft here which, somewhat predictably outlines what SP1 is all about.
Microsoft Download Center - Overview of Windows Vista SP1 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=39b802ea-b2cf-4585-8cea-2cc6a6247cb3&DisplayLang=en)

Thanks, useful document.

Looks like tomorrow is the day.......

The 'day' for me was 6th February ;).
The official release was delayed to prevent third party app/driver issues that plagued the release of XP's SP2.

There is also this article.

If you have to ask, you would not understand ;).

Hmm.. :-\

Hmm.. :-\
What? You too :'( ;)?
As a real enthusiast, I love getting updates and testing them, especially weeks before the official release. Especially MSoft ones which seem to fix more things than mentioned in the release notes.

What? You too?
No not me, I haven't used Windows for years. I was just gently suggesting that your comment might seem a little, er.., abrupt?

Not really. The sentence with a smiley I would consider 'short'. 'Abrupt' implies rudeness. Also, I do not do verbosity.
Anyway, my comments are not OS-specific ;D. My LAN has three PCs permanently connected - all three multi-boot XP, Vista and have at least one linux distro 8).

When I don't understand things I ask,and usually I get a helpful reply. :)

I think the answer to your question is that, if you've been installing the incremental updates as they've become available, then you've already got a large chunk of SP1. How important or urgent the remainder is, I can't say. Hopefully someone else will come along, who's able to fill this in.

Thankyou. :)
No problem, happy to help. BTW, noticed SP1 out officially today as a download patch.
-
I notice that some new build PCs already have SP1 installed too.
-
Vista SP1 can now be found on MS Download Centre.
Useful if you don't have Vista installed atm or may update multiple machines.

Although you may want to read the recommendations from M$ before downloading, this is just a part of it:
Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:
The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
X86 I "assume" is for the 32 bit systems, because my PC's are 32 bit and show up as X86 in variouse places.
-
Btw phil
SP1 is already be on your new PC.
The set-up file in a folder on the Application and Support disk, and appears to be exactly the same one that is available from the above link provided by soms.
-
Thanks Kitz.
I did spot it on the disc, although I did think it had already been pre-installed.
Would you, or do you recommend "Auto Updates" ?
-
OF,I have 'auto updates' enabled and have never had any problems. Some of the optional updates I don't bother with.I have had my vista pc nearly a year now,and the one thing I have noticed is as more updates were installed things seem to run better than when I first got it.
-
The full KB936330 on both the M$ site and on the support disk is 434.5 MB.
If you look at the one on the support disk you will see it includes things like language packs and perhaps a pile of other stuff you dont need.
M$ include things like this in the full KB to ensure that all eventualities for different PC setups are covered and that can be used on any machine, hence why the file size is larger.
If you run the KB936330.exe from the CD then each PC will only take and actually install "the bits it needs".
If you download via the updater you only download "the bits you need".
Hope that makes sense?
-
It does make sense. :)
I think the users with auto updates will be getting SP1 about mid April.
-
I think you're right Phil... and who knows they may even issue it free on CD like they did with the XP service packs.
-
Personally I like to have files for all the Service Packs, especially since we have more than the one PC and every now and again one might get reinstalled. I also fix other peeps PCs occassionally so I find the files useful to have.
Also after a reinstall and service packs I go on microsoft update and download all the updates (bar those I don't want such as IE7 and WMP11).
I do enable automatic update notifications though so I do keep up to date, but I don't let it do it fully automatically.

Well I don't know why microsoft strongly recommends to use Windows Update... probably so people do actually install the correct one.
Yes your right, x86 is 32-bit Windows, although many PCs now use 64-bit processors.
Most PCs ship with 32-bit (x86) version of Windows, which works on both 32-bit and suitable 64-bit platforms.
-
I guess that most people will get it downloaded as a matter of course if they have automatic updates turned on. I have them turned off, as I prefer to live by the good old IBM method (It's Better Manually).
-
I must admit I normally have them turned off so as not to slow down anything else that thats running.
Then just take a look every now and then.
The plus side to this is that you then also get to see any additional software or hardware that there may be.
Which you don't get with auto update.
The other plus side being, if there had been a buggy update, it has then possibly been rectified before I get it.
-
I also have system restore turned off... I too don't like too much carp running in the background... I prefer my PC to be like a George Foreman grill... lean and mean.
-
If anyone was having problems with downloading SP1 and having problems because of the "Sigma Tel" audio driver problem.
I just read elsewhere that the person has now been offered SP1 when they tried again.
So you might want to try it again, if you want to that is.
-
OF,I have auto update enabled and have not as yet been offered SP1.I also have the Sigma Tel onboard sound card.Is this what has been stopping people from being offered SP1.Has this been sorted now?
-
I'm in this position too, I've had a lot of other updates this morning so I'll wait and see whether SP1 comes through later
-
Anne,I too have just had 6 updates come through ready for downloading.I always download everything that is classed as important and recommended. Will have to wait and see too. :)
-

Has this been sorted now?
Yes the Sigma Tel Audio driver seemed to be the problem and stopping SP1 from being downloaded properly.
>> Has this been sorted now?
Possibly
Why don't you all try a "manual" download update and see if SP1 is offered to you this time.
-
After downloading 11 updates this morning, I was finally offered SP1. Just finished installing it, and seems to be trouble free. fingers crossed.
Looks like the Sigma tel has finally been fixed

Glad to hear that.
-
Just seen I to have been offered it,here goes.
Edit, Has installed ok.It took 1hr 40 mins from start to finish. There was only 53.8mb in total, quite a long winded affair.Don't know how long the full install of over 400mb would have taken.
-
I have noticed the 'search' option has now gone in the start menu. Can you put a third party search option there,ie. Google? If so how do you do it.
-
I'm not certain if its the same in Vista (Ive now removed it from all my PCs and put XP on).. but in XP you can set this option.
Control Panel >
TaskBar and Start Menu >
"Start Menu" Tab >
"Customize" button >
"Advanced" Tab >
Tick "Search" which is in the group at the bottom with Run command, Printers etc.

-
Thats done, but where's the search option now?
-
The search option should now be being shown at the very bottom of start menu, the oblong box below where it says > All Programs
It should say "Start Search"
Just type and click the search icon. (next to your Off or Restart icon)
-
Oh that it,Thanks OF. :)
-
YW, glad you have it sorted.
