I am soon moving home and plan to get Sky fibre, but I don't want to use their Sky Hub. I'm familiar with extracting the username and password from the Sky Hub, so no problem there.
My plan is to go for either an HG612 or ECI B-FOCuS, along with an Asus RT-AC68U router. I have no intention or interest in unlocking it or anything like that. I'd just be happy to use it as is, and for it to be updated by BT if they should so wish.
With this in mind, would the ECI B-FOCuS V-2FUb/r Rev. B be the best choice? From what I've read that seems to be the case, but please let me know.
Your help is much appreciated!

it varies depending on the line.

Thanks for your reply. I've seen mention of matching the modem to the cabinet, but this doesn't always seem to be the best for people. Or would you say it's a reasonable way of deciding?
-
it's not what's at the far end of the line that matters so much as the actual line conditions, and the length. Some modems/chipsets handle specific conditions better than others.
-
So the best way to tell is... Buy both and try?

Yes normally but be careful as if you unplug and reconnect too many times DLM could hit you. So leave half hour between unplugging and switching back on. Both modems are easy to aquire on a popular auction site we all know.
Personally I've not tried the ECI even though this was what I had on install as I can't get line stats from it.

I find the eci/r the better of the two on my line.
Also the eci/r doesn't seem to have any issues when bt sends updates - which has been known to affect the hg612 in the past.*
Are you going on the standard 40/10 sky product or Pro ?

Thanks for the replies.
I think I'll probably just go for the standard product.

Hi all, just a quick question related to this. I wanted to try and find the nearest FTTC cabinet to see whether it was Huawei or ECI, out of interest, but despite finding about 3 PCPs close by I can't see any FTTC cabinets. My question is: are all FTTC cabinets connected to the same exchange be the same make? If so I can see plenty of others around so this would probably answer my question.
Thanks in advance.

The fttc cabs can be up to 50m away (although there are a few exceptions where it can be extended to a maximum of 100m).

Unfortunately not. Its not uncommon to see a mix of Huawei 288s and 96s
It also depends when they were installed. During 2013 they tended to go mostly for ECIs.
For example Im on an ECI cab, yet ironically the cab which is closest to me by walking distance is a Huawei 96 - they didnt do that side of the road until last year.
-
Thanks for that; very interesting indeed and not what I was expecting!
Is there any way to find the location of the cabinet, other than just spotting it? It's typical really because I can see them everywhere else.
-
I presume you know to find your cabinet number from http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome. The number is usually painted on the outside of the original cabinet.
-
Use the address checker if you have a Sky phone line http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.AddressOutput
-
Thanks both. I had seen that checker but couldn't get a result as my line is provided by Sky. The address checker worked a treat. Now I just have to find cabinet 4...

If you say the exchange, someone may know

I went for a walk today and managed to find cabinet 4, which was further away that I imagined (approximately 0.2 miles). If I'm not mistaken the FTTC cabinet is an ECI.
-
Yep, that looks like an ECI to me too :)
-
So, in theory, the B-FOCuS should be the better modem?

b*cat nods. ECI equipped it is. :)
Look at all those ventilation slots, all conveniently located to receive a spray of dog's fluid. ;) No wonder the PCBs have started to corrode. :D

I am on an ECI cabinet and I have found that the HG612 performs better than the ECI.
