Title: Need recommendation: TP-Link TD-W8961ND or TD-W8968?
Post by: khealou on January 07, 2015, 01:58:13 AM
Hello there,
I'm getting dropouts very often with my current router. Other routers I've tested seem to work fine, no dropouts at all, so I guess there is a problem with my router it can't maintain the ADSL signal well and thus need to be changed.
I'd like to have your recommendations for which of these two routers is best to buy :

TP-Link TD-W8961ND v3.0
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-W8961ND (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-W8961ND)

TP-Link TD-W8968 v2.0
http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-W8968 (http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TD-W8968)

Unfortunately I only found these two in my area and I need to get one of them very soon for my works. The second one has USB and 3G features which I don't actually need, apart from that, they seem very similar in their functionality, they even use the same chipset brand (a Ralink chipset, not sure if it's a good quality chipset or not, compared to Broadcom or Trendship....)
I don't need anything fancy, no usb or anything, just something rock solid reliable and fast.
Advise me please!

I don't have experience of either routers however I'd say if these are the only Tp link models available go with the V3.0 as it is has newer hardware revisions.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Personally I'd always go for a Broadcom based router as it is possible to get detailed stats on the connection with the like of DSLStats etc. I have never used ant TP-Link routers so cannot comment on these two.

Personally I'd also second the opinion of a broadcom chipset based router if youre having problems with dropouts.

However I note that you are not in the UK and state that sourcing routers can be difficult.   Are you not able to order anything online?  You also dont mention your current make/model with which you are having problems.

Thank you all for your comments, I've contacted my ISP support to see if they can check my phone line perhaps it has noise or something. At the same time, I looked for broadcom based routers and found TD-W8960N v4 and v5, but there is no mention of which version has 5dB antennas!
Also, I'd like to know what's the difference between TD-W8960N v4/v5 and W8961ND v3.0, apart from the chipset?

From the manufacturers website I cant really see much difference other than the colour.

Theres a few people on these forums that have a TD-W8960N.

According to datasheets:
TD-W8960N v5 has 2 x 5dBi antennas
TD-W8960N v4 has 2 x 3dBi antennas
TD-W8961ND v3 has ? (no datasheet for v3!)
