This isn't another bit of Linux evangelism, but a serious attempt at an objective comparison. It's long, but you might find it interesting.

I've come to the same conclusion myself - no more MS being bought here as there is simply no reason to do so. Not even for games which were always a problem - I am VERY impressed with Cedega and have yet to find a single game which won't run under Cedega/Wine.

Installing/messing about with PCLOS 2007 has been a complete revelation to me. Linux desktops have improved out of all recognition and hardware support is improving in leaps and bounds too. Thanks very much for pointing it out to us Eric :)

There seem to be quite a lot of public organisations around the world taking that sort of decision (even one or two governmental bodies in the US, surprisingly).

Hopefully current BECTA guidance stays as it is - ie no schools to install either Vista or Office 2007 if they expect to be funded for ICT next year. I suspect MS will find a corrupt politician to overturn that though.

I've just saved the next-door neighbour the price of Office 2007 by installing OpenOffice for him. He had a trial version of Office 2007 on his daughter's lappie which expired last week and was on the verge of buying it - hopefully OpenOffice is enough of an Office 2003 clone that he won't have to bother. If not then at least he's aware there are options now. He's on BT too so he's also now aware of how hideously slow and overpriced that is here (2.8Mbps on an 8Mbps line at this time of night!) but sadly has just entered into another 12 month contract :(
