Title: HG612 Modem Stats - Release v 3.0 for EXISTING users
Post by: Bald_Eagle1 on June 23, 2014, 05:43:41 AM
A small program for existing v 2.x users to update to v 3.0 can be dowloaded from here:-

http://www.ronski.me.uk/Downloads/v3.0.0.0ProgramUpdates.EXE

Save it to & run it from the Scripts folder.

Existing ini file settings will be preserved, along with the addition of any other settings needed for v 3.0.0.0

Existing versions of the programs will be date stamped & saved in a subfolder of the Scripts folder, named Program Backups

In due course, when using the GUI, general program updates will be optionally automated.
This is not fully functional yet but in the meantime, the GUI itself can still be auto-updated.

Apart from a few minor bug fixes, improved reliability, improved compatibility with the DSLStats program & addition of ADSL compatibility for SOME Broadcom routers, not much has changed from v 2.x

It also removes the annoying every minute 'beep' or 'critical error' sound that some users have heard when using beta test versions for logging ongoing stats.

A full package version 3.0 will be uploaded to the usual FreewareFiles.com later this week, but there will be no need to download it for users that update from v 2.x via the updater program.

As always, constructive feedback is welcomed.

I get this message (see uploaded image) when running the installer in the scripts folder.

This is a Vista 32bit OS.

64bit binary then.

64bit windows can run 32bit binaries but not other way round, why you still on 32bit?

Sorry about that. I thought I had created a version that would work with 64bit & 32bit systems.

I have created another version for 32bit systems that also works on my 64bit W7 system.

I'll let you know as soon as Ronski has made it available for download.

If that still doesn't work, I could provide a plain zip file for unzipping & then running the updater program

64bit binary then.

why you still on 32bit?

Well Vista is an old OEM 32bit version that came with my PC many years ago and it's been on a couple of updated motherboards have not come across anything that needs over 4GB of ram as of yet  ;)

Though I should have purchase the 64bit version of Windows 8 but at the price of £24.99 during the launch the 32bit seemed a bargin  ;D

O.K. Ronski has now replaced the program (same download link) with the 32bit version that should work on all Windows versions from XP upward.

I have downloaded the file but smartscreen filter on Microsoft Security Essentials is unwilling to auto run this program as it's seen as a threat, any way I just unzipped the files and installed them manually and all seems fine.

Was that a one-off or is now it a constant issue?

The updater program should have read your original ini file & then updated it with your existing settings plus any new/missing v 3.0.0.0 settings.

That messages suggests that the ini file is missing, locked or corrupted.

If it's not completely missing, could you post it for me to have a look?

Why do you want the 64bit version, you said yourself that the 32bit version will run fine on 64 bit? It was only the installer file that was 64 bit the programs contained within are still 32 bit.

The logging/graphing programs are all 32 bit anyway.
It's only the updating program that I changed last night from 64 bit to 32 bit.
It works as 32 bit at my end (W7 64 bit system).

It does seem to have been a one off and I don't see any errors to-day.

As for the ini file I can't find or see one for HG612_Modem_stats, also checked in the C:\User\Name\AppData\local can see DSLstats configuration file and others.

Which location should it reside ?

it will run but isnt ideal.

since you compiled it I suggest distributing both versions from now on, as 32bit has to run on a emulation layer.  The vast majority of people run 64bit now days anyway.

It is named HG612_stats.ini

It has to reside in the Scripts folder otherwise you would see the error message every minute.

Do you have the view option set as "Hide extensions for known file types" in the folder options menu?
If so, you are likely to see more that one file named HG612_stats, but with different icons, one of which will be the ini file & another will be HG612_stats.exe

As Abraham Lincoln said:-

“You can please some of the people some of the time all of the people some of the time some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”

Having everything run compiled as 32 bit is my own 'attempt' at making things work for all of the people all of the time

Thanks for having a look, and HG612_Modem_Stats is working well with lastest updates don't know why the auto update installer had a hickup, but have not yet run it on Windows 8.1 if it works fine then it must be a Vista thing  ::)
Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats - Release v 3.0 for EXISTING users
Post by: Ronski on June 24, 2014, 11:42:20 PM
I wonder if the hickup was down to timing, I'm not sure what checks BE1's update program does, but if the logging was not turned off then it is possible the INI file was being read by one of the logging programs when you tried to update them.

I've spent over 5 hours tonight rewriting the update code in the GUI to handle all the major parts of the programs, so I am progressing. Should be able to get a fair bit more done tomorrow night, then it's just a case of fine tuning it.

That sounds like the known Microsoft Task Scheduler bug:-

"Every hour, the Task Scheduler service schedules tasks to be run over the next hour in a schedule window. If the start time of a task coincides with the end of the current schedule window and with the beginning of the next schedule window, then the task may be scheduled two times. In this situation, the task is scheduled at the end of the current schedule window and again at the beginning of the next schedule window."

There is a Microsoft article & hotfix available here:-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2461249/en-us?sd=rss&spid=14019

As there probably aren't too many users across the world that run scheduled tasks every minute while the PC is switched on, it appears that Microsoft has chosen not to include this fix in their general auto-update system.

Deleting & recreating the logging task at say 30 seconds past the minute may help to 'shift' the records of tasks scheduled to run within a given 1 hour window as a workaround.

I used to see the same issue on my W7 system, but I downloaded & applied the hotfix which acted as a permanent cure.

Older versions of HG612_stats.exe would leave behind the ONGOING-ISRUNNING files.

The later versions now record these instances in the log you posted & delete the files.
Any remaining ONGOING-ISRUNNING files nowadays act as a warning that something else had caused HG612_stats.exe to exit early or that it is 'stuck', needing manual intervention to end its process via Task Manager.

Most times, the 'other' running instance is allowed to continue & harvest/record the stats accordingly.

However, as there is only a split second between each instance starting, both instances can occasionally be deleted, especially if some other program has slowed the PC down. e.g. an anti-virus program hogging a lot of CPU resource.

That excellent BE1 have downloaded hotfix and deleted exit_2_Instances log as the last E2I error occured on the 23rd of June.

Just want to see if thoses exit_2_Instances errors comes back before I install the hotfix, just me being over cautious  :D

these issues will become more frequent now microsoft have abandoned service packs :(

many hotfixes are not on windows update, 100s of them if not 1000s.  They usually get rolled out in service packs instead.

Yes. I would only use the hotfix as a last resort.

As the logging programs now generally handle the 2 instances issue cleanly, it's probaly something you could live with, just emptying/deleting the log file now & then.

I only installed the hotfix to test if it actually worked or not.

It certainly worked on my system, but I probably wouldn't install it again now that the programs seem to deal with it O.K.

The hotfix certainly wasn't well publicised & it took literally hours to find it at the time.
I saw many, many users mentioning the issue when googling, but only one that actually pointed me to the Microsoft site.

I'll have to put my hands up here and say I do enjoy a good gaming spree 2 to 3 days a week and some of those games are coming close to 100% on each CPU core while HG612_modem_stats and DSLstats is working away in the background.

I guess it's time to install a I5 CPU + MB and Ram  :( £££

windows 7 will never get a SP2, they announced a while back they stopping them, probably to encourage people to move to windows 8.

Windows 8 has been getting updates but I dont know if they are equivelent to full service packs with all hotfixes included or just feature updates.

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.3.9600]

Is that Windows 8.1?

I don't have that version for testing anything.

It seems almost all your existing programs have the time stamp 2014-06-22-1727. i.e. newer than the actual updated programs:-

Existing [HG612_stats.exe] modified 2014-06-22-1727
Updated [HG612_stats.exe] modified 2014-06-22-0147
*** New file is older than original file ***
*** NOT Updating [HG612_stats.exe] ***

I'll assume that however you installed the original programs, it actually changed the file modified dates to the time they were installed.

Following the attempted update, you should have a file named Updated_Programs.zip in the Scripts folder, containing the real updated files.

You could try unzipping that file to the Scripts folder & allow the existing files to be overwritten.

Even if the modified dates are changed again, you should at least then have the real updated files.

To check which versions you have, right clicking on say HG612_stats.exe, then clicking Properties & then clicking the Details tab should show something like shown in the attachment to this message.

i.e. :-

File version 3.0.0.0
Product version 3.0
Date modified 22/06/2014 01:47

Please let me know if that works.

I'll assume that however you installed the original programs, it actually changed the file modified dates to the time they were installed.

Quite possibly - I originally installed in Program Files, them moved the folder to the root of Drive C: so the change in dates may have happened at that point. It was a recent install (last weekend) but I originally couldn't get it to work as my router's IP address was 192.168.0.1, but it started working (minus the beeps!) when I changed the IP address of the router to 192.168.1.254

Following the attempted update, you should have a file named Updated_Programs.zip in the Scripts folder, containing the real updated files.

I did a test, I copied one of the binaries to another folder and the created data changes to current but modified stays the same so it does seem baldeagle is checking modified correctly.  At least on windows 7.

SoI ran the update program and followed its instructions, all seemed ok.

Ran the gui again and went to the update page and did a update check, it immediatly says the gui is not up to date and a modems program.  IF I check for gui update within the gui app it says its already the latest.

Is this expected?

Yes that is to be expected,  the update tab in that version is very much a work in progress, it does however report the versions correctly.  I'm nearly there with the new version, just a bit more to do.

Sorry to add more complexity but I am trying to run with an Hg658B.  It should work as either an Hg612 or Hg622 - it does with dslstats- but it does not seem to work with modem stats.  The username and password are both different from the the usual admin/admin.  I tried editing them in the .ini file but although the username is shown OK the password is still shown as admin in the gui.

Can both the username and password be changed this way? or do I need to look for other possible issues?

I can modify the GUI easy enough, but BE1 will need to make alterations to his code as well. I'll take a look at that password to, I'm sure the GUI reads it from the ini file.

@les-70, I've checked the password behaviour within the editor, if the selected modem doesn't require a password, the password will be set to admin, but it won't be changed in the ini file unless you save the settings. I think BE1 needs to modify the logging side to work with your modem, we can then add your modem to the list and see what happens.

@BE1 I've just been doing some testing on my Windows 8 laptop. I basically installed V2 of the programs, then updated to V3 using the GUI. I then set everything up including the scheduled task. But nothing happened.

I manually run HG612_Run and got a blue warning come up, unfortunately I never thought to get a screen shot. There is a small button/text labeled  More Info, clicking this then gives the option to run anyway. But still my scheduled task didn't run, strangely running the task manually would work.

Finally sussed it, my laptop was running on the battery and the task was set to only run when on AC power. Seems the same on my server as that has a UPS, so it seems I need to add an option to keep the task running when on batteries*.

*Edit: Option now added when creating the task to carry on running when on batteries.

BE it seems I am already on medium, either I set it and forgot about it or the recent updates forced it to medium.

So I can confirm on medium the stats seem to be updated, as the gui is updating, will post back with graph creation.

Is it enough to just say works or you also want logs even if works?

--edit--

graphs ok also.

Thanks for the feedback.

MEDIUM is now the default for the updated programs.

I'd like to see some examples from your ONGOING_ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT & CURRENT_ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT files to compare against the ones I have from when you were using the FAST setting.

I have currently switched back to an HG612 to check that my installation of modem stats is OK and it is.  I suspect no one else has an Hg658b so I don't advocate any real work being undertaken to support it but I would like to know if both the username and password can be reliably altered via the .ini file?  As far as I can see that is all that needed but it has not worked for me.  I was not quite sure where to look in the various error files but a it looks like a login failure.

Hi Les,

This MIGHT be a quick win.

Does the Hg658B use xdslcmd info --xxxx commands as per the HG612 & do you need to enter BusyBox via the "sh" command?

You could try this, to at least see if it gets a bit further down the logging in line:-

Edit your Modems.txt file in the Editor folder to include "Hg658B,1" directly below "HG622,0":-

HG610,0
HG612,0
HG622,0
Hg658B,1
ZyXel VMG8324-B10A,1
Billion BiPAC 8800NL,1

(Should it actually an upper case 'G' rather than lower case 'g')?

Edit your ini file to whatever your username & password need to be.

Also edit your ini file to state "Hg658B" instead of "HG612"

Then start the GUI to see if it has picked up your changed settings.

Try running HG612_current_stats.exe, either manually or via the button in the GUI & let me know how far it gets.

Thanks, it is of course an HG658b and it does support xdslcmd.  I will swap it in back in tomorrow some time and give it a try.

I was able to swap the HG658 back in the morning.  I can't cap my speeds on it so I have only inserted it when my attainable is at a minimum.  First thing the morning the attainable was 92 which dropped in two jumps to reach 77 by 8 am!  My worry with any modem I can't cap is that any DLM resyncs will always tend to occur at an attainable above 80 and then drop.

That to one side the "HG658B,1" etc additions causes the gui to show the correct passwords/username but it still does not work. Is the ,1 causing it to expect adsl and not the xdslcmd the HG658b uses.  I attach a log of two telnet commands and bits from the current and ongoing error logs.  Unless it looks like a very quick fix please forget about it and don't waste time.  It does work with dslstats and that is allowing testing for the moment..

edit : putty log changed: the first version had a mistyped command included.

edit : i notice that dslstats says "modem seems Hg622 type"

The first part is simply the name, the second part tells the GUI whether to use the default password (admin) or to allow entry of a password. 0 = default, 1 = allow password entry.

You don't need an older version of HG612 Modem Stats, but it will only work after you have managed to unlock the modem using asbokid's instructions.

Does isrunningvb.exe ever access addresses outside the local network?

I'm asking not because I've got a problem with HG612 Modem Stats v3, I think everything is fine, but because I've got occasional firewall log 'funnies'.

I use Privatefirewall 7.0 (http://www.privacyware.com/ (http://www.privacyware.com/)), where applications are reported as attempting to access the internet via something else not permitted by the application privilege control.

The one I currently see is isrunningvb.exe trying to access the internet via pfgui.exe (the firewall GUI) which seems a bit unlikely!

I'm not seeking to start a firewall conversation in this modem stats thread, I'm just curious to know if isrunningvb.exe really does occasionally seek access, or if the 'funnies' are even 'funnier' than I think.

All that isrunningvb.exe does is to check if instances of other associated stats logging programs are already running.

Some firewalls and AV programs class the way the stats programs access the modem as 'potentially' suspicious behaviour & flag it as such.

e.g. AVG blocks them until added to the 'safe' list.

The main programs that accesses the modem are HG612_Run.exe (fleetingly) & HG612_stats.exe (once every minute for just a few seconds).

I would recommend that you allow beta updates to be installed via the HG612 Stats logging GUI program in order to auto-update to the latest v 4.xx programs that include a few more useful stats & newer features such as optional online web based logging/graphing etc. & they are more efficient/reliable.

I will very shortly be releasing v 4 as a full download package, but I would still recommend allowing the beta updates in the meantime.

Thanks for that Bald_Eagle1. I'd sort of assumed it to be spurious.

Re updates. I'll do as you suggest.
