Title: A Packet's Tale - How does the Internet work?
Post by: kitz on May 25, 2014, 08:16:30 PM
Earlier today I was trying to explain to someone a dumbed down version of how the internet works and I decided to have a look to see if there was a simple way to explain it without going into too much depth... when I came across this video done by World Science Festival (http://www.worldsciencefestival.com/).

I thought it did quite a good job, perfect for what I was needing and thought I'd share in case anyone else found it interesting.
The final moments of the video even made me sit back and think... WOW all that in under a second... its quite incredible when you consider the distances involved.

Warriors of the Net is another video I often use, but this also mentions things like TCP/IP and firewalls which was a tad more involved than I wanted to go with this particular person.
Its now a lil bit dated as Im sure I first saw it over 10yrs ago, but its still good

Yep we watched warriors of the net in class at university. Everyone laughed when Appletalk was mentioned. It's still a damn good video for explaining how the internet works even though it's dated, and it gives quite a good feel for how complex the internet actually is, which is useful when trying to explain to irate users why their downloads sometimes get corrupted.

I've now found the time to watch both videos.  :)

They certainly should provide enough information to those persons wanting to know the basics.
