Title: Demon Max and Speedtouch 510v3 router
Post by: ZZDave on September 09, 2006, 02:18:56 PM
I have (had) a Demon "Express Solo" connection, and the equipment is a Speedtouch 510v3 router - yes it's an oldie, but a goodie - or was. An e-mail came a few days ago from Demon to say that "they are pleased to report that my line has been upgraded to MAX".

I hadn't noticed any down-time, and found that the router was still connected and up, and eagerly looked at the router's stats page, and it said 0/0 for the up and down sync speeds. Eeek!

I turned it off and waited a few minutes, and re-powered it, and waited for it to reconnect. Still says 0/0, but it seems to actually be connecting at about 3500kbps down and 350kbps up, according to the Namesco speed test page. I have also tried hardware-resetting the router to factory defaults, and reconfiguring back to previous settings - still no sync speeds reported. Before the line "upgrade", the Speedtouch 510 said something like 287/2272. The filter's a proper NTE5 faceplate filter.

Am I to take it then that this modem/router isn't suitable for MAX, as it can't/won't display the sync speeds, even though I'm pretty sure the spec says "up to 8Mbps", or is there something I can do? Are there different connection specification settings that I'd need to apply for MAX, like a modulation type change or something similar that might be preventing it displaying the sync speeds?

Thanks
ZZDave

Hi Dave

Ive not heard of any problems with this router on Max..  afaik all routers should be able to handle the up to 8Mb speeds.

What does seem strange is that your are obviously connecting at the higher speeds, just not displaying the figures. Do you have the latest firmware installed?

The settings you should have in your router are

Protocol :- PPPoA (PPP over ATM)
Multiplexing method: VC-BASED or VC-Mux
(On some routers the above 2 settings may be combined as "PPPoA VC-Mux".)
VPI = 0
VCI = 38
DSL Standard: G.dmt
Security Protocol: CHAP
