Title: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Bald_Eagle1 on February 05, 2014, 11:09:25 PM
05/02/2014:

A version 2.0 revision to the HG612 Modem Stats package has now been released.

It is available here:-

http://www.freewarefiles.com/HG612-Modem-Stats_program_84567.html (http://www.freewarefiles.com/HG612-Modem-Stats_program_84567.html)

Click the Blue Download Now! button & choose one of the Download Mirrors.

It is still currently aimed only at VDSL2/FTTC connections for Microsoft Windows users, using a Huawei HG612 modem.
Support for the HG622 has temporarily been withdrawn, but is likely to be reinstated in a future minor update.

The package has been fully tested on XP, Vista, Windows 7 & Windows 8/8.1 systems.

What´s New in version 2.0:

•   The programs now work with both HG612s using October 2013´s updated firmware & HG612s where firmware updates have either not taken place or have been blocked.

•   Issues with Windows 8 scheduled tasks stopping after a few hours/days *appear* to have been resolved.

•   More efficient program operation. The programs no longer wait until a called program completes, freeing up CPU & memory resources.

•   The HG612´s firmware version is now reported in Plink logs (Current_Stats folder) & xlogfile.txt (Ongoing_Stats folder).

•   HG612 Stats logging GUI.exe now displays various stats.

•   HG612 Stats logging GUI.exe can now display a slide show of various graphs/montages.

•   HG612 Stats logging GUI.exe can now display ThinkBroadband´s Ping graphs.

•   Extensive event logging can now be switched off via HG612 Stats logging GUI.exe. Very basic event logging is recorded & only genuine errors are recorded in the various error/event log files when extensive logging is switched off. This dramatically reduces the size of the various log files.

•   HG612_stats.ini file delay settings are now ignored for Vista upward, the delay setting now delaying the start of the scheduled task task rather than a pause in the program. The existing task needs to be deleted & re-created via HG612 Stats logging GUI.exe to effect this change.

•   INP graph is now included in Ongoing stats FULL_MONTY montage.

•   Numerous other tweaks and bug fixes that we can´t remember :-)

New users should simply extract the contents of the zip file to Drive C:, ensuring "Expand Folders" or similar setting is selected for a default setup.

Existing users of version 1.1 should extract all the files & subfolders to the relevant existing folders to ensure the slightly different operation of the package is picked up.

Once all the files are in place, existing users should delete the original HG612 Stats Program task & create a new one via the Settings GUI.

By default, Current (snapshot) data will be harvested & plotted every 8 hours, starting at 06:00 & Ongoing data will be harvested every minute, being plotted at 06:00 each day.

These settings can be easily adjusted or logging and/or automated graphing turned off via the Settings GUI.

I have updated from r1.1 to r2.0 and all seems to be working fine, is it normal to still show as V4.1 in the upper right hand side just thought it would be like V5.1 after an update ?

I thought long & hard about whether to update the reported graphing versions, but couldn't decide.
So I left it alone, thinking nobody would notice.  ;)

The main changes are to the stats harvesting & data processing programs. Hence version 2.0 for the package as a whole.

I might align the graph versions with any future minor updates.

Well BE1 the harvesting & process's with HG612_stats don't seem to impact my PC at all running World of Warplanes and many other programs at once so your software for me is silent & clean with my OS (Vista) have not yet updated to r2.0 on windows 8.1 but the last updated files worked well, Many thanks for your excellent software  :clap2:

Other than installing .net 4 is there anything else that needs to be done eg on the modem? I dont seem to be getting any stats on the gui. Ip address is correct and I can navigate to the gui of the modem.

No, it should work fine on an unlocked modem and since you can see the modem gui Im not quite sure what could have gone wrong.
Have you set the paths correctly?  Have you changed the password?

When you say youre not getting any stats, do you mean that the task isnt recording, or that you cant even see this stats page

(https://forum.kitz.co.uk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kitz.co.uk%2Frouters%2Fimages%2FHG612modemstats_linedata.png&hash=3ff5811c259448668dab117b7c54318ce7ad7068)

I can see the stats page on the gui but no stats. I did change the gui password yes, but telnet still works with admin, admin.

Post by: kitz on February 14, 2014, 09:25:31 PM
If youre not getting any stats in that page, and the paths & settings under "Settings > Modem Settings" are correct, then Im afraid Im a bit at a loss to know what it could be :'(

Ive never had to change anything and I did a brand spanking new install last week when I did the updated tutorial.

iirc There did used to be some sort of VB file that you used to have to install on v1, that I didnt have to use this time, but Ronski or BaldEagle are probably the best person to reply and see if they can come up with any other reason what it may be.

I've now updated to the new version and all seems to be working OK.

But when I first tried the update yesterday when I ran HG612 Stats logging GUI I got a message in the GUI about being unable to read modem_stats.log. Now it was the evening, I may have been weary and screwed it up. But when I repeated the update today I still got the message the first time I entered HG612 Stats logging GUI. After exiting and entering the GUI again no error.

As I say it seems to be working OK, stats are accumulating and scheduled reports look good, but this error on first starting the GUI ... it's not normal is it?

It does happen on occasion, the code which watches the log file is part of Windows, and for some reason it can fire twice, meaning my program effectively tries to open the log file again whilst it's already reading data from it, thus producing an error. I have seen it a few times, it's nothing to worry about. Clicking on the error message will open the GUI error log and clear the message from the GUI display.

My virus checker has flagged this up containing a trojan virus. Is this a false positive?

My virus checker has flagged this up containing a trojan virus. Is this a false positive?

Yes. It is a false positive.

All the programs do is access the modem's stats in a similar, but more efficient way to Telnet access, but some virus checkers occasionally see it as 'suspicious' behaviour & offer users the choice of allowing it & adding it to a list of exceptions or not.

I can assure you that allowing it is perfectly safe.

Which virus checker do you use & was a particular program named?

Ive just redownloaded a fresh copy and run a check on it using MSE and it comes up clean.

BE -  Ive just uploaded the file for remote checking and  you may be interested in this (https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/6b0e3bf5063f98d7ea8928dbdb0f9186bfb1cb35be4b7b95d6582c26f48a962c/analysis/) report from Virus Total which I just ran on the file.   Whilst most AVs say its clean, something seems to be chucking up a false postive somewhere on some AVs :/

I cant understand what or why as its a standalone and I cant see anything which could even trigger that result, unless its one of the scripts, because it accesses information from another device on the network via telnet  [edit sorry just noticed you already said this too] ?

Ive forced a rescan, but it still comes up with this (https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/6b0e3bf5063f98d7ea8928dbdb0f9186bfb1cb35be4b7b95d6582c26f48a962c/analysis/1394306553/).

Edit.

Ive marked it as good on the latest report, perhaps youd like to too.

The program "Blat" that is named in some of those virus checkers is simply a command line program used to email logs to me when remotely monitoring other connections.

It is stored in the Apps folder, just in case anyone else wanted to use it.

I run it from a batch file script via Task Scheduler on the monitored conections, but the batch files were intentionally not included in the public release.

If it causes concern, simply delete it or rename it as it isn't activated by anything in release 2.0.

Read what it is here:-

Good job on these scripts BE. One question, is there a way to adjust the scale on the graphs? I'd like to adjust the QLN scale from 0 -160 to -80 -180.
Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Bald_Eagle1 on March 09, 2014, 12:26:25 AM
It's currently hard coded, but I have attached a version of GRAPH6.exe that will do what you ask (see attached).

For curiosity, why have you asked for that range?

-160 is/was as far as the QLN data goes & that actually means 'not applicable'.

My program only plots anything from -159.999 to avoid having a flat line of 'not applicable' data anywhere in the graph.

The 2nd example shows what it would look like if including -160
Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Darren on March 09, 2014, 11:55:45 PM
Didn't realise it meant not applicable, why is it not applicable?

I had a resync at 2:30PM (completely unexpected given I had no spare margin, strange time of day aswell for a resync) and a chunk disappeared, I presumed it had dropped off the scale so wanted to adjust them, easily done with the old scripts. Looking at the raw data though it's all just changed to not applicable so it would indeed just be a flat line. From 0 to -80 just gives a bit more resolution.

bald eagle, the bug that existed some months ago is back.

I keep getting stuck hg612 processes using full cpu power of 1 core and lots of ONGOING-ISRUNNING-040800-210.TXT files

is it possible one of the fixes you put in 1.1 didnt make it to 2.0?

I am downgrading again to see if the problem stays away.

Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Bald_Eagle1 on March 11, 2014, 02:37:46 PM
Hmmm. That's odd.

2 releases that did work O.K. now don't work O.K?

I'm not seeing any issues at my end at all, but I am aware that some users have seen some issues during the last couple of weeks.

I'm not sure if any of the issues are down to the firmware version in use at the time and/or whether or not BT have recently 'tweaked' anything that NoBTagent 'blocked' firmware versions are struggling to cope with.

I am currently working on trying to determine what might be causing the issue(s), but until I see them first-hand at my end, I'm guessing a little as to where it/they might be.

Do you have any very recent Plink logs that you could post for me to compare against my own logs to see if there are any subtle changes?

Also, are you using the original programs from the 2.0 release or any of the amended 'test' programs that I have posted in this forum?

I suppose it's not completely beyond belief that a recent Windows update may have introduced an issue in certain circumstances.
It would be nice if Microsoft tested any proposed Windows updates for compatibility with my programs before automatically updating the world's computers, but I don't think that's very likely, do you?  ;)

Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Chrysalis on March 11, 2014, 06:38:54 PM
Yeah its odd, ran fine for months since you fixed this issue ages ago.

Then I installed 2.0 in its own folder, set the folder in the gui.  Set the same options in the gui as 1.1.

Stopped the service, restarted the service from 2.0 gui.  Problems started.

Stopped the service in 2.0 and restarted it in 1.1, problems came back.

so is odd.

cant find plink log, which folder should it be in?  I guess I may need to enable the debug option as I have that disabled?
Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Bald_Eagle1 on March 11, 2014, 07:42:18 PM
The Plink logs are stored in date/time stamped subfolders of Current_Stats.

A copy of your HG612_stats.ini file from the Scripts folder may also be useful.

Just to ask again, were/are you using the original programs from the 2.0 release download or any of the amended 'test' programs that I have posted in this forum?

I used the ones distributed with it, as I said it has its own folder.

sods law now since I enabled "enable extensive logging" its been ok.

That is an often common occurrence when attempting to debug software. The very act of "turning on" extensive logging, for example, will add to the execution time of the various code fragments. And often it is that increase in execution time, slowing down the overall process, which will allow the software in question to behave "without blemish".

Now I'm not suggesting that is what you are observing in this case but I wonder if the hardware, which you are using to "harvest" the data, incorporates a very fast, multi-core processor?

I just came to report the same thing, only just started logging again so wasn't aware this is a regretion. Seems to happen at the same time each hour. Using the download here (http://www.freewarefiles.com/HG612-Modem-Stats_program_84567.html) on an overclocked hex. Last windows updates were 14th Feb.

O.K.

You could try the attached version of HG612_stats.exe.

It now has a check in it to see if a certain part of the program is stuck in an unending loop.

If that's the case, a new TXT file will be created in the Scripts folder using a name starting with "GET_DATA_ERROR-".
That should serve as a warning that the particular part of the program is stuck in a loop.

Also, with Extensive logging switched ON, some error data should be written to ERROR.LOG & ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT, both stored in the Ongoing_Stats folder.

The program should then exit (all being well) which should allow the next data harvest to run as intended.

If that wasn't the cause, I'll try something else to hopefully eliminate it.

Everything looked O.K. in the Plink & ini files, so I have no real ideas (yet) as to why this has just started to happen.
It might have to be tracked down a bit at a time until the cuplrit is found.

It might help if you could provide some of the recent data from the ERROR.LOG, ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT & Login_events.TXT files that you already have, just in case there is already a clue there.

EDIT:

As I don't know the actual cause (not seeing an issue at my end), my 'forced' error for testing purposes may be the wrong issue, but at least we should be able to eliminate it as a potential cause.

Title: Re: HG612 Modem Stats r2.0 released
Post by: Ronski on March 12, 2014, 09:28:07 AM
I wonder if this is actually being caused by Task scheduler, especially looking at Darrens isrunning time stamps. There is a known bug with task scheduler, basically task scheduler creates a list of scheduled tasks each hour, so it's possible for a task to be at the end of that list, and be scheduled incorrectly at the start of the next list, hence Darren's isrunning files being every hour, at least that's my thinking.

This has been mentioned before, but as there was only one isrunning I'd sort of dismissed it, but the first logging task will run OK, but if another logging task fires whilst it's running that will see the other one running and leave an isrunning file.

See here for an MS Hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2461249) - usual caveat - users try at their own risk.

I am also one of the users that had recently had problems, I had 18,000 isrunning files on my server, the problem occurred several weeks ago and I simply hadn't noticed my logging had stopped until Saturday :-[ The fix BE has just rolled out should remedy the problem I had. It also seems my scheduled task was also running at the lower priority, using the higher priority task I've had no isrunning files in the last 24 hours.

ronski quite possibly yes, I have what 'might' be an interesting update, didnt post at the time as was very tired but made a note of it.

When it happened before I went bed there was also a 2nd process sucking cpu, svchost.exe, I checked the pid and it is assigned to the aelookupsvc http://windows.fyicenter.com/1026_Administration_Services_What_Is_AeLookupSvc.html

Although this is the first time I noticed this I dont know if all previous lockups had the service playing up.

My OS is windows 7 64bit SP1.  Windows update last ran in january.

I have made some adjustments to my programs as pre-release v 2.1 Beta test programs.

Hopefully they will now deal with the issues some of you have seen recently.

I'd be grateful if some of you could test them & provide feedback here.

The changes from v 2.0 are:-

=============================
  Change log from release 2.0
 =============================

* 16/03/2014 - Added US OHFErr (FEC) errors graph to FULL__MONTY montage of
               Ongoing Stats.

* 12/03/2014 - Added more error checking in get_data() function, forcing a
controlled exit if 'stuck' in a loop attempting to
               obtain data.

* 10/03/2014 - Cosmetic graph appearance changes

* 03/03/2014 - Added HG612's firmware version to pbParams stats window.

* 19/02/2014 - Improved efficiency of snapshot graphing program (GRAPH6.exe)

HG612_current_stats.exe now passes a parameter to GRAPH6.exe to
confirm how the Plink log was generated i.e. via a scheduled or
resync event, manually generated via HG612_current_stats.exe or
by dragging & dropping a Plink log onto the GRAPH6.exe program
               icon.

Removed automatic detection of Huawei HG622 modem again as it
occasionally caused HG612 modems to cease logging.

Added the option to choose the modem in use via the GUI or by
manually editing the ini file, defaulting to HG612 unless
               intentionally changed by users.

* 15/02/2014 - Added support for VDSL2 Profile 8a (as used in the Isle of Man)

* 10/02/2014 - Reinstated automatic detection of Huawei HG622 modem

EDIT:

The Beta programs have been removed due to issue when using folders with spaces in their names.

Amended versions below (see Reply #50).

thanks, have popped the files in place and started the schedule.

ok more problems sadly.

it seems its failing to work at all, basically I keep getting ISRUNNING files but with no .txt extension, however there isnt a stuck process so dont know why they appearing.

Also the only log file updating is xlogfile.txt, all the other logs, error logs etc. are not been written to.  If I watch taskmanager live then the stats program very briefly appears but very quickly, much quicker than when it used to work.

The ISRUNNING files also are all empty 0bytes size.

Just a quick note to all.............................

During this pre-release testing phase, although sizes of the various logs & TXT files will increase quite rapidly, Extensive error/event logging should be enabled via the GUI/ini file in order to gain all the relevant debugging details.

The final release version will either get rid some of the files or vastly reduce their sizes.

So I tried the updated file you posted Bald_Eagle1 but it didn't solve the issue.

The Application Experience service is disabled on my system so it can be rulled out unless it's one of several triggers for this issue.

Next up is to try the hotfix posted by Ronski, which requires update 2305420 to be installed first.

I have not tried the beta yet, looks like I shuold hold off, no time to play with it atm anyway.

I ran windows update (bit overdue for my rig) it included a .net update.

and restarted the r2.0 version, the 2.1 binary just crashes when run.

I will report back if the hang issue comes back.

My stats no longer work and I don't know why. Using v2. It has the tasks enabled etc but it's not logging anything and the stats don't update on the GUI. Any idea? I have the IP set to 192.168.1.1 and a NIC at

192.168.1.100
255.255.255.255
blank
DNS auto

Everything is lit up green in the GUI. But nothing has been logged since the 7th.

Does this error log tell you anything?

EDIT: I did a reset and 192.168.1.1 became blocked. I have since installed blob bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B028SP10_no-btagent which has got me back my GUI and IP but the stats are still not showing or being logged in your GUI.

if I run hg612_stats.exe manually it crashes, is that expected?

fault module msvcrt.dll

No, it's completely unexpected!

It doesn't crash at this end when run manually (that's how I test things out).

Is the Ongoing logging (run via the every minute scheduled task working O.K?)

Some of the event/error logs are only updated if the program completes or exits in a controlled manner & some of them update 'on the fly'

In the main, the *.TXT files in the Scripts, Ongoing_Stats & Current_Stats folders update right up to the point where the program might crash.

Have you copied all the files from the zip into your Scripts folder?
They do rely on each other.

Could you please post relevant parts of the various logs for me to try to see where things are going wrong?

I should also note that if any of the event/error logs are open via programs such as Windows own Notepad.exe, the programs are unable to write to them.
However, that should force a controlled exit rather than a program crash.

Free Programs such as TextPad (the one I use) & I think the free Notepad2 do allow open files to be updated though.

Even if HG612_stats.exe is already running on a scheduled task at the same time you try to run it manually, the manually run instance should exit cleanly, reporting an error such as "*** Now in exit_2_instances as there are 2 instances of HG612_stats.exe running"

What folder name(s) were you using when it didn't work?

What have you renamed them back to?

I suspect it may just have something to do with a space in the folder name when it wasn't working.

I thought that aspect was all sorted, but I may have missed something, somewhere with the latest debugging programs.

The log you posted included this:-

17/03/2014 14:07:01.553 - connect() ERROR!!!

That suggests an incorrect IP address or a patch cabling issue.

BE yeah schedule was working as I was getting the new ongoing files every minute :p

right now I am back on the 2.0 programs and so far is ok after the reboot and win update.

Sincere apologies to those who have tried the beta programs which failed.

The issue does indeed appear to have been that some of the code for the debugging files & event logs didn't take folder names that include spaces into account.

I think I have now amended all the relevant code & attached a beta version 2 for any of you brave/mad enough to test them for me.

I have tested them in folders whose names include spaces & everything seems O.K.

Perhaps that has been the issue all along, since I started uploading test versions a while back (maybe even hidden away in the version 2.0 release & only coming to light when a particular file or files needed to be accessed).

Again, all the programs should be unzipped to the Scripts folder.

Thanks Chrysalis.

RONSKI kindly pointed out that his scheduled daily graphing didn't run last night.

It was another instance of folder names that include spaces being missed.

I'm on it now & will post an update shortly (tonight).

I'll also be moving as many of the event/error logs as possible into their own folder in due course, to make it easier to find them all.

Here's the programs again.

Scheduled logging/graphing should now be O.K. again & I have made a start on moving the logs to their own folder.

The first time the new HG612_stats.exe runs, a folder named "Event & Error Logs" should be created as a subfoler in the "Scripts" folder.

For now, the only 2 logs being created in that folder are:-

ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT
Login_events.TXT

The remainder will follow soon.

As always, your feedback is welcomed.

All files unzipped and installed it's seems to be working ok, but it's only the first 10 mins into the test and yes there are only two error logs ;)

ok a new bug report for ronski's side of the app, the gui.

So I rebuilt my pc (basically upgraded) which has also meant reinstalling windows.

I fired up the gui, and then noticed all the boxes were green, yet of course on a new windows install I have no exisiting schedule running.  This also meant the higher priority menu option was greyed out.
I then chose on the task menu to display task info, and a file not found popup error appeared.
I am able to create a new task and it does run, if I then delete the task however, the gui does not detect it is gone, all the boxes stay green and I cannot adjust high priority.

So it seems there is a detection issue when no task exists.  This did not occur before I reinstalled windows.

What is the version number you are running? Can you reply in the GUI thread please.

Hey folks in need of some help.

I am having issues with on going stats graphs, when I generate the graphs they are blank.
Current stats are ok, and on going is collecting ok just failing to graph.

I have downloaded all the latest apps, and updated the .exe to the beta and still nothing.
I have downloaded and unzipped a few times.
All files and folder structures are ok.

Also on a unrelated matter I am not able to check my ip profile using the BTW speedtest site.
I get speeds ok but also a test error telling me to run the test again if needed.

It has been like this from it when active on the 1st,
Now back at my old address I had a ip profile within minuets of the connection going live.

Any one able to offer help/advice ?

Many thanks
Steven

Hi Steven and welcome to the forums.  Sorry to hear you're having problems.

If you are LLU such as Sky/TalkTalk then I've heard that the BT speed test site will not show the further diagnostics stuff.

Regarding the graphing problem it does sound like you have the latest versions of both parts of the program, but do double check that you have the files listed in the post above yours, and have updated to the beta version of the GUI.

I think there was some later updates with BaldEagle1 side of things which addressed issues with spaces in folder names. It would also be worth checking since installing the updates that the modem log is in he correct location as specified in he folder settings,  otherwise a new log would have been started there, and with nothing to graph until the stats had built up. If you have an old and new log then if not too big you can merge them in the correct order.

It is the FTTC Line is am trying to track my ip profile on.

I have also just updated the files and still the same issue.

Hi Steven & welcome to the forum.

I have just plotted the 57 samples in your modem_stats.log by dragging & dropping it onto the gaphpd.exe icon, then specifying 57 m for the period & I have attached it for you.

I have also attached the latest version of graphpd.exe - dated 1st April, the program that creates the ongoing graphs.

I will be releasing version 2.1 of the programs very soon, just undergoing final testing for use with a ZyXel modem.

Let me know if you would like copies of the beta test programs in the meantime.

EDIT:

I see you have a gap in your data & the graphs where a few samples are missing.

Can I ask if you switched the logging off during that period or if you use a very fast PC?

v 2.1 will include user options for SLOW, MEDIUM & FAST PCs, which actually slow down processing time for fast PCs as they can sometimes attempt to obtain data quicker than the modem can actually provide it.

Im sure BE wont mind me sharing the news that 2.1 really is in final stages of testing & has been running uninterrupted with my ZyXEL since Sat.
It also is coping very well with a fast pc (Im testing using the medium setting) and there haven't been any reporting gaps that I can see.
When its been running for a week I'll send BE all the logs and stats - unless you want them sooner.   But atm theres nothing to see other than successful graphing :)

Thanks for the feedback, kitz & thank you also for all the testing time you put in until we arrived at what now appears to a stable version.

Can I ask, are you running the programs in tandem with DSLStats?

I think that if anything was 'wrong', it would have shown by now.

So, you may as well send the logs & stats over.
I'm particularly keen to look for any differences in program operation when your fast PC is otherwise idle (i.e. when nothing else is running to slow it down at all), so it would be most helpful if you could also list some of those times for me to focus on.

I have a version ready, subject to what the logs show, that has the option to turn off the extra debugging information.

Turning this (& extensive event logging) off certainly speeds up processing time at my end, so it might be the case that the MEDIUM PC speed setting is then insufficient for your PC & you may then need to select the FAST PC speed setting.

Yes, and all seems good there too - no errors in the DSLstats log either :)

Sure - I'll do that in a mo for you :)

That would be most of the past 2 days - cause I cant get to the PC easily atm.

Thank you - I shall bear that in mind.

I've added http://www.ronski.me.uk/downloads/HG612_Modem_Stats_Programs.zip to my server, this will always be the latest full version available (as long as I remember!), this will means once Kitz updates the link they won't be broken again. Once installed you should always update using the in program update system.
