Title: Using Dslstats For The First Time
Post by: tickmike on January 29, 2014, 09:21:00 PM
Nice software Eric well done.

Now I have put back a Netgear DG834GT as I have been having some problems with my Speedtouch router.
I gave Dslstats a go and i'm very impressed.
I have downloaded it to my 'Download' directory and once unpacked it I clicked on the 'sdlstats' and set it up.
I set a short-cut to the desktop but when I click on that I get
'List index (0) out of bounds.

Press OK to ignore and risk data corruption.
Press Cancel to kill the program. '
Any idea's to what gone wrong ? please.

That's a bit hard to understand. Does it still work properly if you start it by clicking on 'dslstats' as you did when you first set it up?

Yes.
Well maybe not, it crashed a few times and once it just stopped recording.

Can you copy your dslstats.ini file to me please? (It's in ~/.dslstats).

I'll try to see if there's anything unusual in the configuration which might trigger such behaviour.

As a test, I set up a symbolic link from the dslstats binary file to my desktop. Left-clicking upon that link started execution of the utility and it is operating quite correctly. No errors have been noted.

Thanks Mr Moggie. :)   It's hard to believe that a desktop link would cause such a problem.

PM sent.

I also notice when I try to restore by right clicking icon in tray  then left clicking 'Restore' it flickers sometimes and fails to open and I have to repeat two or three times.
Do you think I should re-download and install ?.
Do I have to shut it down before I turn off computer ?.

If you don't close it down you'll lose some data. DSLstats saves its current configuration, and data concerning errors and traffic (if you're monitoring that), when you close it down.

I recognise the issue with the tray icon, and I'll have a look at that. I don't think it's related to your other problem.

Now that you've preserved your current dslstats.ini, if you want to experiment then I suggest that you delete the ini file and set up DSLstats again from scratch, but start off by doing only the minimum configuration (just the login details) and see how it goes from there.

I set up a 'symbolic link' 0n the desktop again and that's works now. but.....

To day when I booted up this laptop I was under the the impression I ticked a box for auto start, but it did not  :'(
So I set up the program to start at boot in KDE desktop settings, logged out and back in but it opens up with no settings  :( also same if I use my desktop shortcut !.
Edit 2  It was my fault as I un hid the '.dslstats' file and called it 'dsltats-data' and created a shortcut to the desktop, but it did not like that. :'( ....  What will be the correct way to do that ? as I have put it back to default and it works on boot up ok and starts recording .

Got to fill bird seed and nuts up as it's snowing a bit and get back later to it, 2C outside now :o.
Edit. Just got back in before it's snowing heavier now.

I tried the ini file which you copied to me, and changed nothing apart from the login details. On both of my systems it works as it should, so there's nothing remarkable about the configuration which would explain your issues.

If DSLstats isn't picking up the configuration when it starts, that rather suggests that the ini file hasn't been saved. Please check that you are closing down DSLstats properly before logging out or shutting down the computer.

I noticed in the ini file which you copied to me that you set the sampling period to 15 seconds. This is grasping at straws a bit, but it's just possible that this is too frequent for the rather old DG834GT. It would be better, for the time being, to leave the sampling period at 30 seconds to eliminate this as a factor.

Ok Eric thanks (I was just editing the above when you posted ) .
I do not remember changing the sampling period but have set it to 30 again.

Thanks for explaining that. :)  On Linux systems DSLstats expects to find its configuration files in ~/.dslstats, and that can't be changed by the user.

Do the snapshots have to go to a hidden directory ?. If so what's the best way to view them ?.

On the Snapshots configuration page you can select any directory you like to hold the snapshots.

Or is this not the same  ?. my brains cold today and not thinking right  ;D I'm going to turn on the CH .

:)

The configuration files are where all the options are stored, and in common with normal Linux practice these are saved in a hidden directory in the user's home directory (~/.dslstats).

The snapshots aren't configuration files, they are saved data. By default they are saved in the same directory as the configuration files, but you can choose to save them somewhere else.

(You might ask why you can't choose to save the configuration files somewhere else too. But of course, at startup, the program has to know where its configuration files are, so they have to be in a standardised place.)

The dslstats configuration settings is held in the C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\dslstats it may be worth removing this file when dslstats is closed and re-run the the dslstats application again this will start a fresh config settings file and you will need to re-apply all the setting again

The dslstats configuration settings is held in the C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\dslstats . . .

That is very true for persons using the Windows version of Eric's utility, however Michael is a Penguin Hugger . . .  ;)

It looks like the router is not responding .

It looks as though the problem is to do with this particular router (although I accept that DSLstats should really be able to handle the lack of response in a more graceful manner). I'll see if there is any more I can do to trap errors which would cause access violations, but I suspect that I won't be able to do much without working with a DG834GT myself. I've got one I can use, so when I get the chance I'll hook it up and see what happens. It will be a couple of days before I'm able to do this.

You do not need to go to a lot of trouble, I was reporting it so you learn how it works on other peoples systems.  :)

If I get time I might get around to setting it up on my Ras Pi as a stand alone system. ;)

Update ...I have just looked at the graphs and found they froze at the time of the above error.   :(
Stopped and re-started again ok.

Just thought I'd add my own vote of thanks into this thread.
I moved from Be to PlusNet yesterday and carried on initially using my old (somewhat flaky) Netgear DGN2000 running DGTeam firmware.

The "free" PlusNet router arrived today, a TG582N and I decided to try it. Seemed to work OK, but getting detailed info out of it didn't look easy.
Just downloaded DSLstats and I'm now "having a look round".
My first issue to try and resolve is that I'm only getting 888kbps upload, apparently due to interleaving. As I got 1356kbps with Be that seems an implausibly high loss of speed.

Thanks HP.

Those lines which are interleaved upstream at an interleaving depth of I think 8 and above are fixed at 888kbps upload sync speed on the Plusnet system. No idea about other ISP's including BT sorry.

Glad the actual move went ok HP..  the upstream is a bummer though.  What was your target SNRm when on BE*.
The default 6dB on BTw compared to BE*s 3dB could be making a difference, but I think c6em may have hit the nail on the head.
afaik upstream and downstream interleaving can be set separately on adsl2+, so you could even ask if theyd just try turning off interleaving on your upstream if you dont want it removing from both.

>>>  a TG582N and I decided to try it. Seemed to work OK, but getting detailed info out of it didn't look easy

Although some dont like it, Ive come across far worse routers and I think it aint too bad for one of the shall we say less pricey models used by the ISPs.    I can actually find most things that I want, but it isnt always intuitive.   For example some links to access some features arent at all obvious.   It does however work very well with dslstats.

Thanks, I've already asked, so waiting to see if they'll do it.

Downstream my line won't always tolerate Fastpath at 3dB (it did for the first 2 or 3 years  :( ) so I'm being cautious for now and accepting the hit of 6dB interleaved.  :'(
Once the initial phase of DLM is over I'll try 6dB fastpath, hopefully it will be OK.

Well I asked PN to remove interleaving on upstream, but they may have done it on both.
I'm now running at 1167kbps/15980kbps on a 6dB margin. DSLstats reports my downstream interleaving depth as 1 (upstream = 0).
Title: Re: Using Dslstats For The First Time
Post by: roseway on February 05, 2014, 07:13:30 PM
An interleaving depth of 1 means no interleaving, but I have no idea what zero means. I guess it could be just a false report from the router, or possibly a value which blocks DLM from making it interleaved again. (?)

(... and other related comments)

I'm afraid I've been completely unable to reproduce this behaviour. I set up a DG834GT and used it for a couple of days, but DSLstats worked flawlessly on both a 64-bit and a 32-bit Linux machine, despite trying many different options.

For the next release I have made some changes in error trapping and handling which might deal with your issues, but that's all I can think of doing at present.
