Title: BT Homehub 3.0A unlock
Post by: door_bell on January 18, 2014, 09:15:45 PM
Gents,

Anyone got any idea where I can get the files to unlock these beasts???

I see the Psidoc site has been hacked once too often and gone. The other sites I can find all have the actual files removed - it's infuriating.

I've to replace my two routers after one being completely bricked (it was old and it didn't take the firmware and I'm not spending the cash JTAG'ing) and the other one being given to one of my brothers who was in need.

I've been given two of the damn things, but can't use either!! It's got all the functionality I need - IF I can unlock them from beatie!

I have sent you a pm as I may have the bits need.   You are welcome to make the bits available if they work for you.  Good luck

I don't suppose they would possibly work with the business hub 3 as well? I imagine the HH3 and BH3 are slightly different (e.g. firmware versions).

From all the stuff I read, they won't work - it's different.

Sadly yes PsiDOC has gone and I'd just tried to get the software unlock info for a Homehub 3A, 2A and 2B.

Can someone make the 3A files available for me? Also anyone know where to get the files for 2A and 2B homehub?

Hello!

Fortunately, I have the files and you can find them at: http://sdrv.ms/1gHHmYS

The instructions are usually found in the "readme" file(s)!

Ahmed

I investigated this a few months ago and fortunately documented it on my own blog as well as PsiDOC (RIP).

You'll be after these pages, the second of which lets you download the vulnerable firmware direct from BT :

Thank you very much for sharing. Do you have the latest firmware, I found its version is "BT Home Hub 3 - Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.94.1.37 (Type A) ". :)

I have managed to downgrade the firmware.  I'm not sure how to proceed with the next steps to unlock the BT HH3A to other ISP.  Can anyone advise.  Many thanks.

Hi!

I had to search for this as well :D ... hadn't written it down ... in order to configure the BT HH3A (after unlocking) for your ISP/connection type, you need to use this page: http://192.168.1.254/thd_setup

More info at: https://web.archive.org/web/20120730085732/http://www.psidoc.com/showthread.php/620-Hacked-HH3A-amp-other-ISP-settings
(also for advanced configuration, you may consult the OpenRG manual shared alongwith other files above)

Ahmed

Hello Again!

you are welcome ... coming to the firmware version 4.7.5.1.83.8.94.1.37, it caused quite some problems when released ... something to do with vpns but I haven't looked into what caused the original problem and what (if any) steps did bt take to resolve it ... anyways ... in order to acquire this firmware (if it has not been removed from the servers), we need to take a look at the log(s) of a home hub that has received this update ... should look like this: https://community.bt.com/t5/Other-Broadband-Queries/Hub-updated-to-4-7-5-1-83-8-94-1-9-Never-heard-of-it/td-p/828372 (this firmware has been uploaded as well) ... another way would be to downgrade, root the hub and then take a look at the flash layout! ... like here: http://inkhornnet.wordpress.com/2013/08/21/bt-homehub3-flash-layout/

Ahmed

Thanks for that.  Is there a problem with the ext3.img file though?  If I write that image to a USB stick, I can't read it in Windows, and the Home Hub 3 router says "(File type not supported)".  I should be able to see files and folders right?

I've tried 3 different USB sticks, two versions of DiskImage, and also dd, but I've never been able to read anything off the USB stick afterwards.

The version of ext3.img I have is 33,208,222 bytes, and MD5 checksum 859324F7D69FD618D6A63049766E9F52.

Thanks in advance for any help.  Mark

Anyone?  Either the ext3.img file is invalid, or I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.

If someone has the time (maybe ten minutes) to do the following, I'd be a step further:
(DiskImage_1_6_WinAll.exe allows you to overwrite a hard drive btw, so double check that you're writing to a USB stick.)

Thanks!

Hello!

The image is in Linux format (as that is what runs on the BTHH3a) and cannot normally be read by a Windows OS. That is why you can't read it and there are likely no problems with the usb drives.

As far as BTHH3a seeing the usb drive is concerned, one may:
- confirm that you have the Type A and not Type B
- determine if a downgraded firmware is needed or not for unlocking (kindly see the pdf file with downgrade in title for details ... for the files shared by me via onedrive)
- use physical disk number when using DiskImage utility
- create Administrator account with same password as hub when needed
- use Win 7 preferably (even if it's a VM)

Hope this helps!

Ahmed

Sorry for the late reply.  I was away when you replied, then my brother was away when I wanted to test the router at his place.  I'm up and running now thanks to your help.

I'd already checked I had a type A router, and had downgraded the firmware, but the problems I had included:

writing to the physical drive instead of the disk from DiskImage
possibly two bad USB sticks, both very old (I bought a new one)
assuming that I'd be able to read the image in Windows (it worked in Ubuntu)
At some point, I had to start using 192.168.1.254/usb2 instead of usb1.  I have no idea why.
I also had a problem when I was telneting to the router that the smb.conf somehow kept getting overwritten after maybe a minute or two, so that I couldn't get a connection.  I tried and failed a few times to connect to the router with kitty, and changing directories didn't help, but somehow I did finally get a telnet connection.

Anyway, it's all working now, thanks again!

The MD5 you quote is the same as for my (working) ext3.img file. I've also just gone through a very similar experience to you, in relation to the HH2B. Have a read of my recent post about it at https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6&start=20#p1985. In short, keep trying until you find a stick that works. I found a solution, I'm sure you will (if you haven't already).

Thanks, but I already got it working with some help from ahmedfarazch , and it's been doing a fine job at my brother's house for over a year now.

I've just moved from BT Broadband to Origin Broadband, and had been hoping to unlock my Homehub 5, but it doesn't seem to be possible.  Being very environmentally-friendly, I find it disappointing that people up and down the country are forced into buying new routers they shouldn't need, but that's just one more reason to leave BT.  Origin Broadband apparently supply unlocked routers.

(I just found out that I'll have to return the router to Origin when I leave though, or pay £40.  I'll ask if I can return my Homehub 5 to BT. )
