Title: Laptops In Sales.
Post by: tickmike on December 27, 2013, 12:23:10 AM
Anyone seen any good bargains on Laptops  :hmm:

I have seen this at £249
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptops-netbooks/laptops/laptops/packard-bell-easynote-ente69kb-15-6-laptop-silver-21737252-pdt.html

Looking for something with a Hard Drive = 250GB or larger, 4GB or more Ram , 15" Screen, 2GHz or more.. Intel or AMD processor, not bothered about software as it will be wiped. ;) as it will be Linux only.

It's for Mrs tickmike  ;D

That looks quite reasonable. I haven't checked all the specifications . . .  :-\

The only caution I would make is that you make sure that you can install Linux on that machine. Packard Bell are not noted for their friendliness towards Linux.

I did think about that as there are only two listed on   http://www.linlap.com/packard_bell

That looks good to me. It's quite well specified (including 8 GB of RAM). The reviews are mainly favourable, and some of them say that they installed Linux on it.

Yes it looks good, and I noted that a lot of users (from another search) have installed Linux, Bad news the 'cash back' ends on the 31st. >:D

I would expect them to honour the cashback deal provided your purchase was completed before midnight 31st. As far as I can see it is purchase date not delivery date which is important.

While I would expect this to happen, in law its a bit different
The contract is not formed until: - their offer, your acceptance of said offer AND finally the bit that always is curiously missed, their final confirmation back of that acceptance are all completed.
Most online firms now have a clause in the T&C's which states that the contract is formed at dispatch of the said goods - which I suppose they reckon the be the point when they effectively loose control of them so are deemed to have accepted the terms.
(Similar I suppose to when checkout staff hand you the goods in a shop)
To be honest I've always regarded the confirmation email back which usually details the exact pricing of your purchase as the final order acceptance part though I've never had to test it - there is probably an exclusion clause somewhere to the effect that such emails are not order acceptances.

This is how the online firms quite legally extract themselves from the various mispricing disasters where a £500 telly is on the web for £5.  It helps of course if they only charge the credit card at the point of dispatch otherwise charging a CCD at the point of purchase might be regarded as the final order acceptance. (lets gloss over here the difference between a charge being charged and a reserve authorisation being put on a card in advance of a charge to be applied later)

I did once have a similar situation on a multi month long lead time item from a specialist supplier (non computing) and made a point of checking with a view to a forthcoming general price rise they had announced that the price I paid would indeed be the price ruling at the time of purchase and not the prevailing price at the point of delivery when my card would be charged. (Couldn't be arrsed to read the T&C's !).

I ordered the 'Zoostorm' Laptop and it arrived today, I have just done the claim for 'cash back' and it should go through ok.
Not set it up yet.
I could not beleve that it was the same as my daughters one we got her last year, I did price check for it  before I ordered this one and it was EDIT (wrong price  ;))= £110 dearer  with 8G ram ! :o
So 'Zoostorm' laptops are 'clevo' and the same ones as 'pcspecialist' use.

It looks like you have got a good deal.  :)

There was one line in the specification that caught my eye --

Quote
No Operating System

I approve!  ;)

I will be very interested to hear how you get on with Linux on this new laptop. I am in the process of testing 64bit Linux on my desktop and laptop (currently run 32bit on desktop and the laptop is W7). My main problem is getting Skype to work with my webcam. I am unable to obtain anything other than a black screen whatever I use to access the webcam. I've done all the tricks documented about Skype with 64bit Linux but to no avail. Until I can fix this Linux on the laptop is a no-no. Hence my interest in what happens with your laptop (assuming you need Skype).

You can always install 32-bit Linux on a 64-bit machine, and there's really no strong reason to install a 64-bit OS.

Yes I know that but at least on my desktop I need 64bit because Darktable complains I have not enough memory as 32 bit only uses up to 4gb and I have 8gb. Also my video editing will be faster because the system will have 8gb memory to use. I've checked and my webcam on the desktop is fully supported under linux with no caveats at all. If you run memory intensive applications like this 64bit is the way to go. In addition I use Virtualbox to run W7 for the very few things now not supported under Linux and having more memory means I can run other things alongside a VM.

If I put a 64 bit system on this new laptop for the wife and I need to copy all her 'Home' directory off a desktop machine , will that work or are the files saved on a 32 bit machine incompatible ?.

It's not a problem, the user's personal files are not associated with any particular OS architecture.

No it will be fine, I've done it on my test system. The only problem you could have is if she installed any software applications in her home directory which sometimes does happen, then they probably wont work unless they are Java or the like. Make sure though that the user and group numeric values are the same on both systems or you will have permission issues.
