Title: Major Congestion issues with Sky so I am looking for a new ISP
Post by: brutos on November 27, 2013, 12:08:22 PM
So I am still within my contract but due to congestion( going from 60Meg to barley 0.5meg in the evening) issues they have allow me to leave as they are in breach of proving the minimum fibre speeds.

Now only two viable options are Zen and Plusnet but Zen has been rules out so this leaves plusnet, anyone has any experience with them, hows the quality of the fibre service and customer service.
Do they have their own backhaul network ?

I've been with PN for ten years now, and just over a year on FTTC. 80/20 unlimited.

I've no complaints about speed, my connection syncs at about 47/9 and I never had any congestion issues.

I'm pretty sure they use BTs back haul.

Support is UK based, but on complicated faults you can tend to keep going over things,  as you get various support agents dealing with the issue,  I suspect this is true of many bigger ISPs.

Their forums are also a good place for support with many active staff members.

It's also possible to reduce your monthly payments via refferals,  all the time someone you refferred is with Plusnet you will get a discount off your bill.  If you refer enough people  they will even pay you.

I've recently moved our work broadband over to business fibre with them, and I wouldn't have done this if I wasn't confident with them.

I first went with PN over 10yrs ago, then went BE* LLU (be stupid not to take advantage of 24/2.6Mb Annex-m).
Sky's purchase of BE* and FTTC coming to my area meant I moved back to Plusnet.

Sky & congestion isnt too good here either and I see it on some other connections 'I look after'.  Ive just moved one of them over to PN... and Ive only just got off the phone to PN with regards to another.   The wait to get through to CS wasnt good - it took about 20mins, which is much longer than I normally wait.  Not sure if it was the time of day or what.  I couldnt see the CS graph as it said something about not being monitored whilst they were in the process of transferring telephone support over to Leeds.   However once I did get through I cannot fault the support I was given on behalf of the EU.

Within the past few months Ive also had an issue/fault with my own line.  I cant really complain about the support I got on that, the problem was more to do with the BT side of things and they kept rejecting it without me even chasing.  I was about to throw the towel in, and probably would have, if CS hadnt of rejected it yet again and it finally got fixed. Just say Im damn glad I wasnt with BT/Sky/etc.

No signs of congestion here, they use Dedicated WBMC (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/wbc_wbmc.htm#WBMC_dedicated).

Thanks guys this was my connection last night and for the past 4 weeks every single night with Sky. Guess its the right decision to move they have been so slow in reacting and doing anything about the issues. And I can now use my cisco router without hacking anything.

Not sure what the spike was at 10.30pm, but since I got home to a notice on my PC saying it needed a reboot for windows update to take effect, I think its a safe bet that Windows was doing an automatic update at that time.

I would say that things have actually improved recently, there always used to be a bit of a ping hump in the evening but looking at the graphs this has now gone.

yeah plusnet graphs do look improved lately although is still a small increase in latency visible on them, although the amount there is shouldnt be noticeable.
