Title: vpn tunnel

Hi ppl

is it possible to make a tunnel from 1 computer to another using vpn  connection to the internet using the tunnel for multiplayer gaming ?

Yes it is. XP Pro (not sure about home or MCE) actually allows you to set up a basic VPN server. However there will be additional latency due to the extra overhead caused by wrapping the data in the VPN, and the encryption used

Also, if the game thinks it's on a zero latency high-bandwidth LAN, there could be issues in that respect.

But it's worth a shot. There's some instructions on how to set up the XP VPN server on this page (http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm)

what about ports will i have problems with that to?

i dont think xp home will be able to do it but mce should for its xp pro with mce attached.

to setup port forwarding if you use it, take a look at :   

http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

.... select the router you have and follow the instructions.

Zanoma - on that page I linked to I think it did mention that you will need to forward port 1723 to the VPN server.

going to have a play with that dmt tool tonight thow :)

yes i did have a look on there its a good site  but my game is not listed on there but i no the ports it use's

Well, if you're using a VPN for connecting, you don't need to port forward anything else, since when you're connected through VPN, you are effectively on the same LAN, so all ports between the two computers are open, barring any software firewalls, etc.

Oh, and yeah, portforward.com is a great site too! :)
