Title: Avatar upload
Post by: sheddyian on September 21, 2013, 07:59:30 PM
Maybe it's a deliberate security thing, but seeing as I've been here getting on for 2 year I thought I'd upload an avatar for my account.  In the change avatar settings I chose "upload file" and selected the file I wanted.  It thought about it for some time and then said

The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Is it deliberate, broken, or did I do something wrong?

Kitz is doing some background work on the forum at the moment, so it's probably just a temporary situation.

Can you bear with me a little while on this please Ian.  I'm currently working on something which will be affecting mods and certain file permissions.  Unfortunately a few things broke when I last did some manual mods.. IE tapatalk.

I got things up and running again, but atm some of the settings are basic and some files are not writable.  What you guys may not be aware of is that behind the scenes ive taken this opportinuity and I'm working on getting our very own brand new server, its just taking me a while to config all the software.

Rather than trying to fix what's broken, everything should be set up afresh.
Sometime over the coming week or so there will be an announcement of some downtime whilst I merge this database onto the new and propagate the DNS.

The server is all set up..  I've been doing the wiki today..  Tomorrow  hopefully the forum..  As soon as I'm happy everything is working correctly ill switch it to live. :)

If its still a problem after then, please remind me

Of course!

I evidently chose the wrong time to decide to have an avatar.

I'm not in a rush, I'll try again in a few weeks or whenever you think it might be sorted.

I noticed, earlier today, that S*mum mentioned she was having a problem uploading a picture of Scotty to be her avatar. So Kitz' 'confession' now explains why.  ;)

I've just spotted this.  I'll just hang on to 'post' Scotty again ...  unless my old one can be 're-established ?     Like sheddyian, I'm not in any hurry  :)

Ian - if you'd like to try again.
I may still need to set some permission settings back to how they were previously.   I've changed a few things back, but cant test with my own av since I have full perms anyhow.

Let me know if you get any error messages which will help me find if theres anything else I need to change.
Thank you :)

PS max av size for upload is 80x80 pixels.

Just tried to upload an avatar, and got this error

The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved.

Although the image I tried to upload was almost certainly larger than 80x80 pixels.  Didn't realise that restriction at the time.

Looks like it's working!

Also, I didn't resize this - it's uploaded dimensions are 1458 x 1260 (373Kb) so it looks like the forum software resizes it for you  ;D

Yes there is a GDmodule that does this & converts it to a .png, but it can be a bit temperamental.  Easier to just say that the max size is 80x80 because thats the max it will display ;)

Woohoo!

Now, I've got this awesome 45Mb animated .GIF of an exploding shed....

hahah... no you dont..
Hence why if it does do a resize.. Ive set it so that it wont reproduce .gifs  ;)

If you want a .gif you will have to stick to 80x80.

Whilst on that topic, a reminder to all.  Anything considered too distracting or flashing will be removed - see rules (http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,6.msg21036.html#msg21036) :)

It is me and it is (one of) my sheds, despite it looking photoshopped - it's real.

I'd just cut the holes for some extra windows.

Am about to upload animated gif of the window fitting procedure, ending with spectacular pyrotechnic display (~5Gb)

Is that the shed from which I view the garden (via the sheddycam) each day?  :-\

That is the shed from which the shedcam looks out of (though not out of THOSE windows)

And I have previously had live streaming of a bonfire

And I have lots of branches and other stuff to clear in the garden
