this will probably sound a daft question to most of you in the know ...but
when one is seeding one obviously has to be connected to the internet and have ones client open...but does one have to be logged in to the tracker website that it was downloaded from , or not ?
(hope I have got the terminology right ;D )

No, you don't have to be logged into any site. Once you've downloaded the torrent file your system doesn't need to know where it came from.
