Title: Panorama maker needed
Post by: broadstairs on June 10, 2013, 10:16:46 AM
I am looking for a panorama maker but not the usual sort which automatically stitches because the photos my wife took are a seascape which can be easily matched by eye but not by computer. So what I am looking for is one which allows manual aligning of the images by dragging each photo to align it and not one which requires stitch points to be set.

Anyone any ideas please? I can use a Windows program if a Linux one does not exist.

If you want to do it purely by eye, I would think that you could do it with Gimp. Start with the first image, enlarge its canvas horizontally as much as necessary, then copy and paste the other images, dragging each one into position after pasting it. (You have to flatten the image after enlarging its canvas, otherwise pasting doesn't seem to do anything).

That being said, I would have thought that Hugin would do the job, but it has so many expert options that it's a bit overwhelming.

Yes I tried Hugin but it needs align points creating, I've not found a way to overlap and drag the images. I thought about GIMP but I'm lazy  ::) but I may have a go if I cannot find anything else.

I had booted XP today in virtualbox and then remembered I had an old copy of The Panorama Factory so decided to try it and see what happened. It made a passable attempt to create this panorama I've been trying to get done, not perfect but good enough and it also allows the user to manipulate the images after it has done its thing so you can visually alter things slightly. I might try fine tuning it some more later. This program is not cheap at $80 US currently but it does do quite a good job. Sometime when I have more time I'll see if I can get Hugin to do it as well, Hugin has always worked very well for me but normally I am careful as to what I want to stitch together and make sure there are plenty of tings which can be used for alignment.

It's an area of photography which I haven't really pursued, after a couple of early efforts (too much to do, too little time...) :'(

I've used Panora Factory to stitch scanned paper marine charts together and it works quite well for this. Not cheap though.
