Title: Linux Format magazine
Post by: roseway on December 12, 2007, 10:10:33 AM
If anyone's interested, the new (Jan 2008) issue of Linux Format magazine has two complete distros (PCLinuxOS 2007 and Fedora 8 ) on its cover DVD, and a big feature on PCLinuxOS. It's an expensive magazine at £6.49, but on the other hand where else can you buy two complete modern operating systems for £6.49 and get a magazine thrown in as well? :)

Well considering a monthly magazine typically costs £4, and a blank CD with packaging around 25p, that works out at a quid per OS.  Bargain.

In your esteemed opinion Eric, is the magazine a decent read?

It's decent enough that I have a subscription. Looking at this new issue, I see that it has got a 4-page article for beginners on migrating from Windows to Linux, and another on on migrating calendar, mail and contacts data. Certainly worth having a flip through in WHS I would have thought.

I'll stick it on the weekend shopping list. :)

As someone who has dabbled in Linux for the last few years I have found Linux Format to be a very informative read. It is a bit expensive but I am buying it so often these days I'm thinking of subscribing.

I made a special trip to WH Smith yesterday but no sign of this mag at all

Edit - just looked at the website, it came out on 13 Dec  :-X why can't 'January' issues be released in January?

Advertisers.

I've seen copies of magazines on shelves now which are MARCH editions.

Total nonsense isn't it? :(

Hello All,
I also picked this up during the last week. I've been dabbling with Linux for the past few years, and currently have three Linux boxes all with Fedora Core 6 installed. I understand that that version is a little old now, so will try the new Fedora 8 over the next few days.

Can anyone (Eric ???) offer any suggestions how to set up one of these three machines to be the governor for software update purposes. I have read the YUM man pages, but unfortunately I'm stumped.

Seasons Greetings to you all

Sorry, but I've never tried doing that, and I don't use Fedora so I don't know anything about YUM.

My local WHS still has the Jan issue on the shelves.
