Hi All,
Rooting about in my junkbox, I came across a Regulator 6B, and I'd like to know what it's for.
It's a 1974 Post Office item, Rate Book (is it still called that?) Item Code 434915. About 3ins (8cm) long, it appears to comprise solely of an inductor, or at least some wound component, and two zener diodes.
I think it may have some connection to a Jack Unit 1A or 1B, which housed the same circuitry as a 700 series telephone, into which one plugged a headset for use on, typically, a Works Order/Circuit Provision desk.
Googling has proved fruitless - any information appreciated.

I stand to be corrected, but from what I can glean, OD hasn't been 'on' a long time ?! Therefore I think we need a real long-timer to come forth. ;) ;D

Considering the 700-series telephones first came into use in 1959 (I saw my first one in the early 1960s), we possibly need some input from an ex-GPO Telephone Engineer. :)

Thanks for all the interest. I've been doing some more intensive digging, and eventually found this PDF of a Jack Unit 1B -

Note 3 states that the regulator is fitted between T11 and T17, which effectively places it in parallel with the transmitter in the headset.
As the Jack Unit would in most cases be used in, or very near to, an exchange, I can only think that maybe it was to limit the voltage across, and thereby the current through, the headset transmitter. Perhaps otherwise they tended to 'fry'?

Put it forward as a 'New idea' to the Guv'nor of Texas. It could act as a dual-purpose device that replaces 'Old Sparky'. The death row inmate could use his last phone call and pay his pennance at the same time. ;)

Ah, that clearly shows its use. Interestingly that plan seems to show the PCB of a telephone type 746. :)

You had me thinking that I had committed yet another folly, 4C but, fortunately, when I rechecked it I saw that what I had thought was there --

The first 700 series telephone that b*cat recalls is the 706, introduced in 1959. That was the ultimate parent of the 746 (and other subsequent minor variants). :P
